10 Things You're Going to Like About The New Mommy Poppins (we hope)

6/22/09 - By Anna Fader

Mommy Poppins has always been a labor of love, but never more so than working on this redesign. Actually this project started out as just a simple desire to expand our neighborhood pages and make it easier to find all our new guides, but Simon, my amazing (and handsome) developer, was so good at making my wouldn't it be cool ifs... come true, I just kept coming up with more, and more...and more. Finally, a mere 9 months later, we've got a whole new site, with a new design and lots of cool features that make it easier to find what you're looking for and more fun to use.

Read on for highlights of some of the new cool features of the site and please leave a comment and let us know what you think:

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

1. New Neighborhood Pages We've added separate pages for each borough, plus Long Island, New Jersey and Hudson Valley pages. Our neighborhood pages each have their own map, hot spots, area resources, restaurant reviews (coming later this week), and a bookstore of children's books and useful references relevant to the area, plus recent news and events about the area.

2. Maps Want to know where something is and what's nearby? On each neighborhood page you'll find a map with markers for all the places we've written about in the area. Click on any marker and a window pops up with the address and links to all the stories we've written about that place. You can drag the map to scroll and zoom in to get a closer look.

We've also added maps to our posts, so when you're reading a post you can see where the places we've written about are. Those maps will only show the places in that article. To see other places nearby, you can go to the neighborhood map.

3. Guide Carousel We've added so many new guides this year, we ran out of room to list them all. Now, you can see all our guides listed in the header and click on the arrows to scroll to see more.

4. Hot Spots and Popular Posts To help you find our top posts even after they've moved off the home page, we created our Hot Spots and Popular posts block. The popular posts change every day, depending on what you guys are reading, so it's fun to check out.

5. Keeping NYC Great Moving down the right sidebar, you'll find our Keep NYC Great block. Right now many of the wonderful non-profit institutions that make New York so great are being threatened by big cut backs in funding and donations. We believe it's so important to support these organizations, we've added this area of our site to highlight some of the organizations that need our help. If you want these guys around tomorrow, please support them today.

6. Twitter! I've found twitter to be a great way to let people know about all the cool things going on that I can't write up as a full post, but I know most of you aren't using twitter. Now you can see my tweets right on the home page in the Just Tweeted section of the left sidebar. Check this spot throughout the day for up to the minute news about what's going on. All KidBuzzNY tweets will show up there too.

7. Comments We do our best to get everything right, but you guys are truly our best resource and your comments prove it. I wanted to make sure that the gems you share don't get hidden away never to be seen. Now your comments will show up in the left sidebar so we can all see them at a glance and keep the conversation going.

8. Our Store Life in New York has some particular requirements. We've picked out the things we believe to be essential and put them in our online store. See some picks on the home page or click the link at the bottom to see all the items.

9. Snap this up We love bringing you deals and discounts. Our Snap This Up section brings you today's hot deal.

10. Searching Need to find something? We've added a footer to every page that lists all our categories and guides. There's also a search form in the header which works pretty well. But if you're looking for something and can't find it, email me and I'll let you know, or if it's something we haven't written about yet, maybe we will.

We're still working on some things. We'll be rolling out individual neighborhood pages soon, so keep an eye out for your neighborhood to be added. And if you'd like to be a neighborhood contributor just say so!

I hope you'll look around the new site and leave a comment to let me know what you think. What do you like, what did we get wrong, anything we're missing? Let me know so we can fix it! Of course, a simple "I love it!" is OK too.
