Fun & Free Things to Do this Weekend in Boston: Dragon Boat Festival, Bunker Hill Parade and More June 9-10
Boston-area families can find plenty of fun and free things to do this weekend. From Big Joe’s Storytelling Show at Barefoot Books in Concord and a performance of Little Red Riding Hood in Newburyport to the Dragon Boat Festival in Cambridge and a Food Truck Festival in Boston, the weekend is filled with festivals and celebrations.

Theater in the Open presents a mash-up of classic tales, where Merry Men and Wary Wolves abound. It’s a zany show for all ages. FREE
Revere Beach Summer Fest - Revere Beach
Daily through 6/15
The carnival features games, food, and rides, including the Freakout, Vertigo, and the Arctic Blast. Magic shows take place Wednesday through Sunday. $25; see website for coupon.
Metro Boston Race Amity Day: A Festival for the Human Family - Rose Kennedy Greenway, Boston
Sunday, 6/10
The event feature local celebrity hosts, live musical entertainment, dance, art exhibits, Brett the Yo-yo King, Curious George and other children’s characters, spoken word artists, as well as concessions with food from around the world. The event also features a Health and Wellness Tent, Job Fair Tent, College Fair Tent, Arts Tent, Get Connected Tent, and the Red Cross Blood Mobile Bus. FREE
Boston Dragon Boat Festival - Cambridge
Sunday, 6/10
Over 50 teams are expected to race in this year’s Dragon Boat Festival - the 34th anniversary of the first appearance of dragon boats on the Charles River. Time trials take place Saturday and races on Sunday.
Sunday’s festival features live musical and dance performances, arts and crafts demonstrations, and tasty Asian foods. FREE Admission
Food Truck Festival - U Mass Boston
Sunday, 6/10
Here’s a chance to taste some of the area’s gourmet cuisine on wheels at the Boston Food Truck Festival at the UMass Boston Campus Center. Your ticket lets you have a taste from every food truck - maybe the kids will discover something new! Adults $35; Children (6-10) $10, (5 & under) free
Family Music Festival - Lowell School Park, Cambridge
Sunday, 6/10
Music and family fun in the Park as New School of Music fills the Lowell School Park with musical fun and activities for all ages. Enjoy family picnic games, face-painting, crafts, bake sale, concerts and a musical instrument “Petting Zoo.”
While most events are free, the indoor concert with Ethan Rossitter Family Fun Band (1pm) is $5; tickets at the door.
Bunker Hill Parade - Charlestown
Sunday, 6/10
Park rangers, bands, troops, re-enactors, and groups from all over Massachusetts march through the streets of Charlestown to honor the memory of the men who served in the American Revolution’s first major battle. The parade helps to kick off Bunker Hill Week - a week of activities that ends on June 17, the 237th anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill. FREE
Sheep Shearing Festival - Winslow Farm Animal Sanctuary, Norton
Sunday, 6/10
It’s time again for the sheep to shed their wooly coats and enjoy the warm weather. Sheep are sheared at 9:30 sharp. This event is a learning event and very interesting to watch. (Rescheduled from June 3) FREE to watch
A Day of Music - Boston Children’s Museum
Sunday, 6/10
A Day of Music features live performances by string musicians from the Handel and Haydn Society at 10:30am and the Sharon Concert Band at 12n & 1pm. Visitors can see a variety of instruments from the museum collections, make their own instruments, join a dance party, and cap it off with a parade at 3:15pm. Free with admission
