Hello February! You might think the beginning of this chilly month doesn’t have much to offer but there’s plenty of fun to be had with two great winter holidays. Celebrate the Chinese New Year at Newark Museum and cross your fingers for a quick end to the cold weather at the Reeves-Reed Arboretum’s Groundhog Day Festival. And if you need a little pre-game Super Bowl excitement, head to Liberty Science Center and check out the last few weeks of the awesome Gridiron Glory exhibit. Gridiron Glory (Jersey City, NJ)
Just in time for this Sunday’s Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium, Gridiron Glory combines sports, history and culture into an exciting, interactive exhibition. Explore the history and vigor of this all-American sports phenomenon with rare historical artifacts and hands-on fun as you try on vintage uniforms and visit the Instant Replay Booth. The exhibition even features a Hometown Heroes section showcasing the Giants & Jets teams.

Winter Photo Scavenger Hunt (Morristown, NJ)
Looking for something to do outside during the winter weekends? Grab a camera or phone (and bundle up!) and stop by the Haggerty Education Center for a nature photo scavenger hunt. Visitors can pick up a list, head outside and shoot away. Take a picture of every item on the list, return to the Education Center and pick up your prize. February’s theme is “Love is in the Air!”

Saturday, February 1st

Groundhog Day Celebration (Hamilton, NJ)
Will he see his shadow? Come find out at Grounds for Sculpture’s 9th annual celebration in honor of Groundhog Day, featuring shadow-inspired family drop-in workshops, tours of the park and a musical performance finale. Don’t miss the Sun & Shadow prints workshop, where kids can experiment with light and shadow using special paper to create their own unique prints!

Chinese New Year Celebration (Newark, NJ)
Get a dose of education and culture inside during a chilly weekend at Newark Museum’s Chinese New Year shindig. Celebrate the "Year of the Horse" with performances of traditional Lion Dance and Chinese martial arts. Don't miss a chance to explore masterworks in the exhibition Ming to Modern: Elevating the Everyday in Chinese Art.

In Search of Owls (Pennington, NJ)
Begin the evening indoors at the Stony Brook-Millstone Reserve as you listen to a presentation by Education Director Jeff Hoagland, who will introduce you to owls, their calls and adaptations. After a night hike in search of the nocturnal raptors, your group will warm up indoors with a hot beverage. Dress for wintry trail conditions!

Dragon King (Upper Saddle River, NJ)
Celebrate the Chinese New Year with a performance at the Saddle Valley River Cultural Center this Saturday. Watch the Tanglewood Marionettes as they tell the enchanting story of the Dragon King – an underwater fantasy based on Chinese folklore. Add colorful sea creatures and plenty of adventure and you’ve got a show sure to entertain the kiddos on a cold winter afternoon.

Sunday, February 2nd

The Gizmo Guys (Hackettstown, NJ)
Simply put, the Gizmo Guys are a comedy juggling act. But they’re also much more! Their act includes original routines, quick-witted verbal repartee and world class juggling skills in a very light-hearted approach to the art sure to wow both children and parents. Don’t miss their NJ tour stop this Sunday at Lackland Center’s Sitnik Theater.

It’s Groundhog Day! (Summit, NJ)
While Beacon Hill Bob, the Reeves-Reed Arboretum's resident groundhog, is sound asleep in his burrow, families will head outside and decide if there will be 6 more weeks of winter (we hope not!) You’ll also learn all about this furry animal and how the tradition of the holiday came about.

A Winter’s Day on the Farm (Morristown, NJ)
Experience a day-in-the-life as lived by early 20th century farm families when the Fosterfields estate opens its doors to offer hands-on, winter farm activities. Climb aboard the open-air, tractor-pulled wagon for a ride around the farm. Get up close and personal with farm animals, including horse, pigs, chickens, cows and sheep. And weather permitting, watch the farmers harvest blocks of ice from the ice pond.
