3/20/09 - By Anna Fader

If you aren't heading out of the city this weekend for some Maple Sugaring, don't worry. There's more than enough to make your weekend slammin' right here in town, with lots of circus performances, concerts, festivals a science fair, and more—all free (except for the circus shows, but who can resist a circus act?). And this weekend marks the official beginning of Spring so get out and have fun!

And don't forget to check our events calendar for some more fun activities too.

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

Breaking News: The widely publicized Circus Minimus at the Bowery Poetry Club has been postponed. But you can still get your fill of circus-y fun with Will Shaw who will be juggling, unicycling, balance tricks, boomerangs, cowboy rope tricks, music, fire tricks, sight gags, and clowning. And the audience is sure to get in on the act. $10. Sunday, March 22 at noon. BoweryPoetry.org for details.

If that's not enough clowning around for you here are some other circus shows this weekend:

The Hey Ya Brothers do a slapstick routine á la Charlie Chaplin. Their show plays on Sundays at 2pm on West 30th Street, runs through April 5, costs $10 and is recommended for ages 3 and up. Find out more at HeyYaBrothers.com

Or check out Circus INcongruous—think one man Cirque Du Soleil— at the Tribeca performing Arts Center. Tickets are $25, but if you can scrape together ten people you can get them for $12 a piece. So gather up some friends or classmates and check out this amazing show. Saturday, March 21 at 1:30. TribecaPAC.org for more information.

Lastly there's Yo, Jonah by the Poppy Seed Players at the Kaufman Center, a circus-inspired retelling of the Biblical story of Jonah and the Whale. $20, Sunday, March 22 at 11am. Kaufman-Center.org.

Now, let's get to the free events:

The Scholastic Store is having a Science Fair with demonstrations of science experiments and ideas for experiments that kids can do on their own, all drawn from the magic School Bus Series of science kits. Saturday, March 21, 3PM Scholastic Store SoHo 557 Broadway between Prince and Spring. Free.

Turtle Bay Music School Presents a free performance by their own faculty String Quartet. "What is a Fugue?" is part of their "What Is" Free Family Concert Series and is a fun and interactive way to learn about musical topics and instruments. Saturday, March 21 at 2:30. Free. More info tbms.org.

I always find this event amusing: Garment Factory Workshop. Yeshiva University Museum in Chelsea invites children to practice "piecework", the basic sewing that women performed in sweatshops. Kids will learn how to sew a denim apron and can imagine the labor of women who did this work (maybe). Sunday, March 22, 2-4pm. Ages 6 and up. This event will be repeated on April 19th. Free with Museum admission ($6-$8) YUMuseum.org.

Celebrate World Water Day at The Museum of Natural History with loads of educational activities, including scavenger hunts, origami, a microscopic underwater safari, a puppet show and more. All free with admission (suggested donation). Saturday, March 21, 11am-4pm. AMNH.org/worldwaterday
