News: Free swimming, yoga, ice skating and more

1/11/10 - By Anna Fader

Last week I mentioned that the NYC Parks Department was having an open house this week, making all of their rec centers available for free. At the time I hadn't been able to confirm whether the swimming pools were going to be available or not, so I have some more information now that made this worth repeating. I also have some more free fitness deals to check out. Learn how to get free ice skating in Prospect Park and a week of free yoga too.

More details on BeFitNYC Open House Week for free swimming and fitness programs:
From Monday, January 11 through Saturday, January 16, all NYC parks department recreation centers will be open and all facilities and activities will be available for free. This includes fitness classes like aerobics, yoga, but it also means the pools and training equipment. You can swim during open swim times for free all week long. Search BeFitNYC, Parks’ online fitness search engine, to find recreation centers and activities in your neighborhood.

All of rec centers will host open house events, but there will be five centers featured during the week with extra special events and activities:

Monday 1/11: Chelsea Recreation Center, 430 West 25th Street in Manhattan
Tuesday 1/12: St. Mary’s Recreation Center, East 145th Street and St. Ann’s Avenue in the Bronx
Wednesday 1/13: Greenbelt Recreation Center, 501 Brielle Avenue across from Sea View Hospital in Staten Island
Thursday 1/14: St. John’s Recreation Center, 1251 Prospect Place b/w Troy and Schenectady Aves in Brooklyn
Friday 1/15: Al Oerter Recreation Center, 131-40 Fowler Avenue in Flushing, Queens

A free week of yoga from Yogaworks:
Flavorpill is promoting a deal for a free week of yoga at Yogaworks in SoHo. The deal is good through January 31. Get the coupon here.

Get a free skating pass for Prospect Park Ice Skating Rink:
Either rent a pair of skates or make a purchase of $15 at the snack bar and get a coupon good for a future free rink admission. Not valid on Holiday Mondays. See website for more info.

Spots available for NYC 1/2 Marathon:
This isn't a freebie, but I got a note from the FAF team for the NYC 1/2 Marathon that said that, while the lottery is closed for placements, they have spots available on their team. So if you're dying to run, but didn't get a spot, you can sign up/research further at their Registration Page.
