All Weekend

Alstede Farm Spring Fun Days (Chester, NJ)
Alstede Farm is a Mommy Poppins favorite in all seasons, but we really get excited when the baby animals arrive! After all, it’s hard to resist baby chicks, bunnies and two baby lambs. The day of farm play also includes wagon rides, a hay bale maze, a giant hay pyramid for climbing and the always popular moon bounce. And if the weather turns a bit chilly (as it often does in early spring), your gang can cozy up to the warm campfire before stopping by the farm store for some homemade pies and fresh produce to bring back home. Saturday & Sunday 10am-5pm. $11.95/Child $4.95/Adult. 908-879-7198

Saturday, April 6th

WBGO FREE Kids Jazz Concert Series: What is Latin Jazz? (Newark, NJ)

Families will be introduced to the idioms, concepts and historical timeline of catchy Afro-Caribbean and Pan-American rhythms fused with the harmonic structure of jazz. Q&A sessions with the artists, small gifts and a chance to win a door prize add to the musical fun. 12:30-1:30pm. FREE (Seats available on a first come, first serve basis). (973) 624-8880 x 0

Spring Skies (Branchburg, NJ)
Instead of spending Saturday afternoon watching the latest big screen flick, head over to the Planetarium at Raritan Valley Community College to discover what the skies above look like come springtime. The show is designed to keep elementary-aged kids engaged as they learn about Leo the Lion in the southern sky, Ursa Major high in the north and which planets are visible from Earth. Advance reservations recommended. 2pm. $7/Person. 908-231-8805

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Cherry Hill, NJ)
The Garden State Discovery Theatre takes on the classic tale of the young lady with skin as white as snow and adds a contemporary twist. All of the basic ingredients are still there: the seven little friends, the evil counterpart, the mirror, the apple… but the fairy tale “stay at home gal” is now a modern day young woman. Recommended for ages 4 & up. 2pm. Ticket prices vary. 856-424-1233

Pond Discovery Day (Locust, NJ)
Now that spring has sprung, most kids are itching to get outside and well, get a little dirty! If you’re up for a nature-filled afternoon, head to Huber Woods Park wearing old clothes and rain boots. Join a Monmouth County Park System Naturalist as they help your group catch frogs, fish and all kinds of squiggly, amazing critters that live in a freshwater pond. If your family still has energy left to burn, the park has 8 miles of hike-able trails and sun-soaked meadows. Recommended for ages 6 to 12. 10:30am-12pm. $13/Person.

Sunday, April 7th

Casey Carle’s Bubblemania (Englewood, NJ)
It's a soapy spectacular as bubble artist Casey Carle brings his act to the Bergen Performing Arts Center. Carle holds the quirky title ‘bubble consultant’ to Cirque du Soleil and you will definitely see why! The show is super entertaining for both kids and grownups with visual comedy, witty banter and big band music – and of course, gigantic bubbles. Recommended for ages 4 & up. Show times at 1 & 3pm. $17/Person. 201-227-1030

Vernal Pools of the Sourland Mountains (Rileyville, NJ)
Join Naturalist Allison Jackson on an exploratory hike of vernal pools in the peaceful Sourland Mountains and learn about life cycles and the food web while searching for amphibians, insects, reptiles and other native creatures. For a beautiful way to welcome in the springtime, pack a picnic lunch and take a hike through the park’s ‘yellow trail’ after your class to see a colorful array of wildflowers all around. Recommended for families with children 5 & up. 10-11am. $5/Person.

Frogfest (Cape May Point, NJ)
If you’re up for a dose of off-beat amphibian fun, make your way down the shore on Sunday for Frogfest at Cape May Point State Park. Bring snacks and water along as you begin the afternoon with a guided hike. Afterwards, let the kids cool off as they watch the frog-friendly puppet show before playing games and making crafts as they learn about frogs and other park creatures. And don’t forget to bring a toy or stuffed frog (decked out in their best gear!) for the ‘Best-Dressed Frog Contest!’ Registration required – all ages welcome. 1pm. FREE. 609-884-2159
