Fun and Free Things to Do with Kids in Boston - Discovery Day, Play Date, Touch a Boat and More, 5/25-5/27

It’s a long holiday weekend, and there are plenty of fun and free things to do with kids in and around Boston, from Lexington's Discovery Day and the Run to Remember Expo to Play Date at the ICA. And please be sure to see our special Memorial Day activities post for special events happening all weekend long, including an Open House at the MFA, the Garden of Flags tribute on the Boston Common, and the Remembrance Concert at Christopher Columbus Park. Lexington Discovery Day - Muzzy Street, Lexington

The annual festival begins with a street fair and sidewalk sale from 10am-3pm and concludes with an outdoor concert by the “NoWheremen”, a local Beatles cover band, at 3:30pm in Depot Square. Local restaurants sell a variety of foods.

Free LEXPRESS rides help reduce traffic. For those driving, there is free parking at all Lexington Center parking meters and in the Meriam Street Lot.


Touch a Boat - Hingham Harbor - Iron Horse Park

The second annual event features police boats to climb aboard, plus buoy painting, a pirate treasure hunt, maritime crafts, a history of the harbor exhibit, knot tying demonstration, face painting and more. Wear a life jacket to be entered in a drawing to win a trip around the harbor with the Hingham Harbormaster, Ken Corson and his team. Plenty of parking beside the town boat ramp.


Run to Remember Expo and Run - Seaport World Trade Center, Boston|

FREE Expo & Kids Run

The Boston Police Department and Boston Police Runner’s Club hosts the sixth Run To Remember, honoring Massachusetts Law Enforcement Officers killed in the line of duty by celebrating their lives and giving back to the community.

Saturday and Sunday: Sports and Fitness Expo: over 30 exhibitors offering great savings, new product samples, nationally recognized athletes and service providers. Children’s activities include jump rooms, clowns, K-9 demonstrations, story telling, kids safety programs and more. Sat 9am-5pm; Sun 6am-12n.

Saturday: Kids Fun Runs begin at 10am on top of the Seaport World Trade Center. There is no entry fee and all finishers receive an official finisher’s ribbon. You do not have to sign up in advance, simply come to the starting line between 9:30am and 10am on Saturday morning. Races begin at promptly 10am.

Sunday: Half-marathon begins at the Seaport World Trade Center, through Fanueil Hall, the Boston Common, by the State House and along the Charles River. (Sold Out)


Memorial Day Weekend Family Fun - USS Constitution Museum, Charlestown

Kids learn about the life of a marine and sailor at sea by learning to march, using the tools of the seafarer’s trade, exploring everyday life on board USS Constitution, and making an officer’s hat. Young sailors can purchase a “Build a Ship” activity to take home or make at the Museum ($2).


The Yankee Peddler - Puppet Showplace Theatre, Brookline

Ever wanted to sing along with a sea shanty? Or dive deep into a fox's den? This performance draws from 300 years of stories, songs, and local history for a whirlwind tour of New England's lesser-known folklore where you'll discover a giant sailor, a fashionable bear, and the world's largest wheel of cheese.


Author Visit: Carolyn Curtis - Barefoot Books, Concord

Join Carolyn Curtis, author of I Took the Moon for a Walk, for a special story time about all things nocturnal, complete with singing, simple puppets and even a fun craft. The event concludes with a book signing.


New Exhibit: Alice's Wonderland - EcoTarium, Worcester

The Ecotarium's newest exhibit is based on Lewis Carroll's classic, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and features a rabbit hole to crawl into, the Hall of Doors, the Queen in her garden, and a Mad Tea Party, all designed to inspire curiosity and encourage exploration.


Play Date: A Step Ahead - ICA - Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston

Free for families: up to two adults per family accompanied by children ages 6–12

Celebrate May with a tour of the ICA neighborhood led by Boston by Foot! Enjoy lunch on the ICA Grandstand, visit the galleries, catch a dance/theater performance by Boston City Lights at 1:30 PM, then wrap things up with a creative twist in the Bank of America Art Lab. Art-making activities are led by visiting artists; participants may also make sketches outdoors overlooking Boston Harbor.
