Fun and Free Things to Do with Kids in and Around Boston: Festivals, Circus, and More, July 27-28

There are plenty of fun and free things for families to do in and around Boston during this, the last weekend in July. Circus Smirkus comes to Gore Place in Waltham, and Vanessa Trien and the Jumping Monkeys, the Airborne Comedians, and Ben Rudnick & Friends perform at the Summer Arts Festival on Copley Plaza. Newburyport’s Yankee Homecoming Festival kicks off with Old Fashioned Sunday, and Figment Boston brings large-scale art making to the Rose Kennedy Greenway.

Family Day - Commonwealth Shakespeare Company - Parkman Bandstand, Boston Common

Commonwealth Shakespeare Company offers an afternoon of Shakespeare related activities and performances just for families. Kids can enjoy activities and games, a performance of A Kid Summer Night's Dream (by City Stage), an interactive costume exhibit (by Wheelock Family Theatre), and presentations of Henry and Cymbeline.

The Lowell Folk Festival brings together sounds from all across the world, showcasing West African, Irish, Quebecois, Dominican, Portuguese, Greek and many more types of music. A family activity area hosts box-hockey, beanbag tosses and an assortment of other games, plus a crafts area and diverse food offerings.


Summer Arts Festival - Copley Plaza, Boston

Copley Square comes alive for a the three-day musical celebration, the Copley Stage comes alive today with everything from rock 'n' roll to Celtic, Broadway, a capella, Latin, brass, classical, kids, folk, and even a touch of the blues.


Circus Smirkus - Gore Place, Waltham

Every summer, a company of talented Smirkus Troupers, ages 11 to 18, go on a two-month performance tour around New England. This year’s show, Oz Incorporated, features a new spin on the Wizard of Oz.


Futures at Fenway - Fenway Park, Boston

It's a great day of baseball action featuring Red Sox prospects and lots of family fun. The game features Red Sox AA affiliates Portland Sea Dogs vs. Harrisburg Senators. Following the game, there will be post-game autograph session with Sea Dogs players.

Families can also enjoy a post-game concert featuring Kidz Bop Kids and a Family Festival/Wellness Expo in the Big Concourse. Also, for the first time at Fenway Park, fans will have a chance to bring their dogs to the ballpark. Designated sections of the seating bowl will be available to owners and their dogs. To purchase a dog ticket, please call 877-REDSOX-9. All dog owners must print out the attached waiver, complete it and bring it with them to Fenway Park on July 27.


Figment Boston - Rose F. Kennedy Greenway, Boston

Newburyport's Yankee Homecoming is a week long celebration featuring nightly concerts and street performers, road race, fireworks show and a parade down Historic High Street. The festival kicks off today with Old Fashioned Sunday, which combines many fun activities that harken back to a bygone era: a pancake breakfast, pet show, antique car display, boat rides, games, and concerts.

Kids and parents alike can enjoy the summertime series with performances by top artists. Today's performance features Sol y Canto presenting a bilingual and interactive musical fiesta full of toe-tapping plena, son, calypso, and reggae styles. Plus, Rosi and Brian read from two of the bilingual books they've narrated, Fiesta Fiasco and Lola's Fandango.

Purchase tickets in advance, and come early to get a great table near the stage for you and the little ones to be able to jump up and join the musicians easily at the club.
