Free Festivals and Things to Do this Weekend in Boston: Cambridge River Festival, Audubon Nature Fest, June 1-2
Festivals and musical celebrations - this weekend offers a hint of what’s to come as the season kicks in to high gear - from the banks of the Charles for the Cambridge River Festival to the streets of Lexington for Lexington Discovery Day, from the ICA for a Boston Children’s Chorus concert to the Boston Children’s Museum for a concert with a trio of Boston Symphony Orchestra musicians, from Topsfield for the Audubon Nature Festival to City Hall Plaza for the Jimmy Fund Scooper Bowl (Tuesday through Thursday).

A Boy Called King - ICA, Boston

To celebrate its 10th anniversary, the Boston Children's Chorus has partnered with the ICA to present an evening of contemporary choral music, including a new work by Haitian-American composer Daniel Roumain, specially commissioned for this performance, combined with a dance performance featuring choreography by Amy Seiwert and a libretto by Marc Bamuthi Joseph.

The annual festival begins with a street fair and sidewalk sale from 10am-3pm and concludes with an outdoor concert by the “NoWheremen”, a local Beatles cover band, at 3:30pm in Depot Square. Local restaurants sell a variety of foods.
Free Family Concert: The Sounds of Song and Dance - Hyde Park Branch Library

Sing, swirl, tango, and twirl... Whether you like to find the beat or break into song, music makes your spirits soar! So kick up your heels and join in on an afternoon of classical chamber music inspired by songs and dances from around the world. An instrument “Petting Zoo” and demonstration follows in the library's outdoor Children's Garden. Children can handle and play orchestral instruments as guided by the musicians, and are encouraged to touch, blow, pluck, bow, and strike.
Cambridge River Festival - Memorial Drive, Cambridge

The celebration of the arts along the banks of the Charles River features jazz, folk, roots and world music performances, dance, art demonstrations, family art-making activities and over 100 specialty food purveyors and crafts people.
Free Fishing Weekend - Statewide

Take a friend or family member fishing for free - you won’t need a fishing license to fish any waterbody statewide for these two days.
On Sunday, at the annual Horn Pond Fishing Festival in Woburn, you can cast a line, learn about fishing and water safety. Bring your equipment, or borrow from a limited quantity of fishing equipment available. FREE
Note that except for this weekend, a license is required for those 15 and older; licenses for 15 to 17 year olds are free, though. Licenses available at www.mass.gov/massfishhunt. Purchase of a fishing license directly supports fishing, stocking, education and fish habitat management programs.
Concert for Very Young People - Boston Children’s Museum

In partnership with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Children’s Museum brings a trio of BSO musicians to the museum for a live, interactive performance geared to very young children ages 2-5 and their families.
Audubon Nature Festival - Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary, Topsfield

Enjoy ongoing activities throughout the day, including live owl presentations by Marcia and Mark Wilson of Eyes On Owls. Come see live owls up close, learn about their natural history, and join in a hooting lesson. Crawl inside our demonstration beaver lodge, learn about solar power, sustainability, and ways to be more "green" through exhibits and activities. Enjoy nature walks, henna, face painting, children's games and activities, reptiles and amphibians, an insect zoo, craft demonstrations and vendors, naturalist-guided walks, pond explorations, demonstrations on composting and planting to attract wildlife, food, a bake sale, and much more.
Sanctuary garden volunteers are on hand to give guided tours of our nature gardens and advice on plant selection and gardening using native plants to attract wildlife. A schedule of events is available on the website the week before the event. Rain or shine.
Jimmy Fund Scooper Bowl - City Hall Plaza, Boston

The 31st annual Jimmy Fund Scooper Bowl is the nation's largest all-you-can-eat ice cream festival. The event serves up ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sorbet from ten of the nation's leading ice cream companies.
