New at the New Vic: 46 Circus Acts in 45 Minutes
If you think 46 Circus Acts in 45 Minutes is just what it sounds like, you're only half right. Yes, the ticking of an onstage clock makes for a whirlwind of impressive tricks and tumbles. But precision is hardly the name of the game here, and the time piece is forgotten almost as soon as it is introduced. All eyes are on the Australian ensemble, Darcy, Louie and the Emmas—yes, there are two of them— who infuse the show with cheeky charm and slapstick antics that appeal to all ages.

The performers, however, remain comically aware of their timer, launching into a breakneck cirque set of hoop diving, whip cracking, uni-cycle riding and contortions. The vaudevillian acts get a 21st century twist thanks to a live DJ's eclectic musical mash-up. (Could speed metal, Survivor, “Sex Machine” and Carmina Burana count as music education?) While the pace remains fast enough to keep youngsters' attention, the performers pause here and there for quick explainers, introductions and call-and-response with the crowd.
Some acts—bubble wrap tap dancing, inflatable animal tricks—are so wholly family friendly parents can rest easy. Others, like ladder balancing, come with explicit “don't try this at home” warnings. Still others occupy a grey area that might compel parents to reiterate the rules of the house. “Slapstick 101,” for example, features the revolving board head slap seen in so many silent movies. Hilarious today, hurts-like-heck tomorrow.
Unlike many “all ages” shows, 46 Circus Acts really does offer parents and children something at all times. The tricks are legitimately awe-inspiring, but the performers take time to layer on slapstick for young grades schoolers, body humor for 'tweens and a bit of saucy Aussie irony for adults. Plan for an awkward conversation with your 13-year-old, or your husband, after seeing red stilettos do their worst in an act called “Pleasure and Pain.”
46 Circus Acts in 45 Minutes runs through April 4 at the New Victory Theater. Tickets start at $12.50 for non-members $8.75 for members. Orchestra seats cost $35 for non members and $24.50 for members. Purchase them at the box office or through the theater's website, NewVictory.org.
