WeeWork Kids Craft: Pom Pom Creatures

3/3/14 - By Amelia Eigerman

There's something about pom poms that just brings out the inner child in all of us.  I have no idea what it is about these balls of fluff, but somehow they can make just about anyone stop, drop, and play.  Little kids (and big ones too!) will love getting to make something so fun basically on their own.  Turning these adorable pom poms into cool creatures that you can play with for ages is just the icing on the cake.

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

1. Wrap the yarn around your hand or fingers.  Keep wrapping until you've got a thick bundle of yarn on your hand.  If the yarn is thinner, wrap it around fewer fingers.  If it's thicker, wrap it fewer times.  Slide the yarn off your hand, keeping a finger in the middle so it doesn't tangle.

2. Cut a piece of yarn about six inches and pull it through the center of your pom pom.  Tie it around one side of the yarn bundle, then wrap it around the whole thing and tie it in a knot. You should have a little package of yarn that looks a bit like a peanut.  Take a pair of scissors and cut the loops on either side of the "peanut".  The yarn should look mildly pom-pom-like.  To finish it off, trim away any awkward strands of yarn so it's nice and spherical and fluff.

3. To turn our pom poms into awesome creatures, glue googley eyes, buttons, or other adornments to your pom poms. You could also make antennae out of pipe cleaners, or turn some felt into a pair of feet.  Let your inner Dr. Frankenstein fly!

These little creatures are super customizable.  We used different types and colors of yarn for different looks, and added all sorts of cool accessories to our little yarn family.  There are also so many other things to do with pom poms.  You can find some cool pom pom crafts on Pinterest.  Get crafting!

If you try this WeeWork project, share it on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and tag @mommypoppins so we can see your creations too!
