There are so many wonderful activities to enjoy this time of year in and around Houston. From shopping at holiday markets, checking out the Nutcracker Ballet and other holiday shows to family volunteering, there is no shortage of holiday fun. You can even cut down your own Christmas tree. But if you are looking for an exciting, family-friendly tradition that truly captures the beauty of the holiday season, attending a tree lighting is the way to go. We've rounded up some wonderful tree lighting celebrations and best of all, they are all FREE!

30th Annual Wortham Tree Lighting
Nov. 23, Wortham Theater Center

Join Houston Grand Opera, Houston Ballet, Houston Public Media, and Houston First to kick off the holiday season in the theater district with a holiday tree lighting, live performances, and an opportunity to take pictures with Santa. Bring gently used books to donate to Books Between Kids.

31st Annual Uptown Houston Holiday Lighting
Nov. 24 along Post Oak Boulevard

This holiday event starts at 4:00 p.m. with holiday tunes and concession stands serving the flavors of the holiday, a percentage of the sales benefit local charities. The Merry Holiday Stage Show with live music and dance performances starts at 5:00 p.m. At 7:00 p.m. Santa and his reindeer will light up the lights on 80 trees and rooftops along the boulevard followed by a dazzling fireworks extravaganza!

Sugar Land's 14th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony
Dec. 1, Sugar Land Town Square

See Santa, watch live performances, and participate in holiday crafts and fun activities, such as a photo booth and face painting at this FREE annual event. Kids can also try out an Everest climb n' slide, a toboggan ride, and a rock climbing wall and everyone can enjoy food, drinks, and treats available for purchase.

97th Annual Mayor's Holiday Celebration & Tree Lighting
Dec. 2, Hermann Square at City Hall

A fun, downtown holiday event for the whole family with music, Santa, fireworks, and a glowing holiday tree. Bring a new, unwrapped toy to donate to a child in need and receive a light-up Santa hat at the Reliant booth.

16th Annual Christmas in the Park Festival and Tree Lighting at Kingwood Town Center
Dec. 3, Kingwood Town Center

Travel up north for Christmas in the Park and enjoy live music while you also browse local shops and vendors. Kids can get photos with Santa, dance to the music, and visit fun booths while you find unique holiday gifts. At 6 p.m. the festival will wrap up with the lighting of the beautiful Town Center Christmas tree.

3rd Annual Holiday Tree Lighting and Kwanzaa Celebration
Dec. 10 on Almeda between Calumet and Southmore

Check out this event to experience a one-of-a-kind fashion show and an interactive Kwanzaa Village. In addition to the tree lighting and fireworks show, there will be live entertainment, photos with Santa, a kids' zone with a rock climbing wall and delicious holiday food and beverages available at food trucks and stands. Free shuttle parking available.
