February GoList: Best Things To Do with LA Kids

February is a time to appreciate where we live perhaps more than any other—not simply because of the opportunity to celebrate the valentines, presidents, parades, and whales below, but also because we live in a place where we can ski if we want to without ever having to move our cars out of the way of snowplows. Our hearts go out to our friends and family in other states, of course; they really should come to visit. We'll use our weekend event roundups, our 100 Things List, and this February GoList to show them a good time, while they escape that winter thing they're all suffering from.

All of the cooler-than-cool activities below are on our daily events calendar, but a little extra notice helps to make sure your kids don't miss out. Click through to the full listings so that you can automatically add them to your calendar. Happy February!

February GoList: Best Things to do with Houston Kids This Month

It seems Houston's few days of winter have passed, and that's the way we like it, but in case you need ideas for indoor activities on the random chilly days we will likely face - trampoline parks, rock climbing gyms, or a fun indoor playground are always good options. We've also come up with a list of eight museums you've probably never heard of to take the kids to.

And if you're the planning type, you may have started thinking about summer plans, like what in the world you're going to do to keep your kids busy all day. Check out our summer and vacation camp guide for ideas on things they can do out of the house. Read on for the best things to do with the kids this month.

February GoList: The Best Things to Do With Long Island Kids

Pity little February. If ever a month were deserving of an identity crisis, it would be the shortest month on our calendar. The holidays have passed, spring is at least a month away, and your kids are almost guaranteed to get ill.

There’s no denying it: Even at 28 days, February is the most tedious month of our 12. And every four years we even add a day just to make the monotony linger.

The good news is 2019 is not a leap year. But before we fast-forward into March, let’s think about all February does offer Long Islanders.

  • There’s a weeklong school break right in the middle of the month.
  • A chance to show our loved ones how much we care, at Valentine's Day.
  • The best opportunity on our calendar to learn about cultural diversity.
  • A groundhog (really, a prairie dog) leads the celebration toward an early spring.
  • There’s even a football game on the first weekend that some consider Super.

February isn’t ideal. But we at Mommy Poppins recognize there’s still plenty to enjoy in these four weeks. You just have to look a bit more closely.

For example, Lunar New Year brings cultural celebrations to Garden CityEast Rockaway, Stony Brook, and Port Washington. And Sag Harbor's annual winter celebration delivers a fitting exclamation point to a short but fun-filled month.

Of course, our Winter Fun Guide offers plenty of inspiration for Long Island families coping with February cabin fever. And our Long Island Events Calendar offers exciting family options as they develop throughout the month.

February GoList: The Best Things to Do in Westchester with Kids

Though February is prone to unsavory weather, the bright side is the many exciting family events happening in Westchester and the Hudson Valley. With celebrations of Valentine’s Day, Presidents’ Day, Black History Month, Mardi Gras, and Chinese New Year, the fun is sure to chase away the chill!

Not all the events we’re highlighting this month fall under those themes, though. New this year is City of Science, a hard-to-believe-it’s-FREE attraction for STEAM lovers. With recent changes to the circus industry, the annual appearance by the Royal Hanneford Circus takes on added significance.

Other February traditions include the Chinese New Year Festival, featuring acrobats, cuisine, and other cultural appeal; Old-Fashioned Winter’s Afternoon, offering seasonal fun; and Maple Sugaring Tours (with a kick-off party, to boot), heralding the launch of maple-sugaring season. Several stage productions also merit parental attention (unfortunately, The Cat in the Hat, which we highlighted in our 50 winter activities post as a hot ticket, is sold out).

This is just the tip of the iceberg! Read on for the full list of our month’s top picks, and remember you'll find many more on our Event Calendar, plus lots more on the way. Sign up for our newsletters to keep track of new finds!
