13 Ways to Celebrate Valentine's Day with Kids

Valentine's Day as an adult can be wonderfully romantic or terribly lonely depending on one's relationship status. But from a child's perspective, the day can be fun and sweet. It gives kids a chance to be creative by making cards, mailboxes, and decorating cookies and is an opportunity to learn about love, kindness, and caring for others. If you are going to have a Valentine's date night, make sure to check out some of these options for Parent's Nights Out childcare. And don't forget there are also fantastic ways to celebrate Black History Month with many events around the Bayou City. 

Here are some ways you can celebrate Valentine's Day as a whole family:

1. For a date-night with your kiddos on Valentine's Day, visit PDQ, where little ones get a FREE kids meal with the purchase of any combo meal from 3 pm to close. There are locations at Bunker Hill, Vintage Park, Cinco Ranch, and Cypress. 

2. Take the family to the Enchanted Promenade by TILT at Discovery Green. The exhibit is FREE and open through February 19. The awe-inspiring glowing floral LED light displays aren't specifically up for Valentine's Day but they reflect the romance and excitement of the holiday. 

3. Check out heart-shaped art at the Amor Eterno exhibit at Casa Ramirez Folkart Gallery in the Heights. The gallery is FREE and open to the public from 11 a.m.- 5 p.m. The show continues through February 23.

4. For more art, visit Sugar Land's Art Center and Gallery on Saturday, February 11 for the Small Art for Big Hearts Exhibit. Purchase small or big art from a large selection of one-of-a-kind art, talk to the artists, and enjoy refreshments. Children can create their own Valentine's Day cards. 

5. A fun Valentine's alternative is the Flower-Palooza event on Saturday, February 11 at the Pop Shop America Boutique at New Living in the Heights. There will be kombucha samples, tarot readings, cookie dough, and cotton candy too! Learn how to make terrariums and flower crowns and buy the supplies to make your own with onsite instruction from experts.

6. For more flowers, attend the Creation Station: Three Friends of Winter event at the Asia Society on Saturday, February 11. Although it's not technically a Valentine's event, there will be lots of flowers, specifically bamboo, pine, and plum blossoms (the three friends of winter), which are considered symbols of strength and perseverance and appear throughout Asian art. Participants will create their own craft projects inspired by these plants. 

7. Have a family movie night at the Central Green, with a romantic Greek themed evening. There will be traditional Olympian Greek dancing, the creation of an ice sculpture, live music, and a screening of My Big Fat Greek Wedding (PG-13). The FREE festivities start at 5pm. 

8. Make some Valentine's with your older child or teen at Lawndale Art Center's Handmade Valentine Workshop on Sunday, February 12 from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm. Cost is $5 for member and $8 for nonmembers and you must register all participants ahead of time as space is limited. Using a variety of hand-painted papers and college materials, you can create approximately 5 lovely love notes, while you enjoy cookies and beverages.

9. For younger children, pick up some art supplies for at-home Valentine's projects at Micheal's Arts and Crafts and let the kids make some crafts or decorate cookies while you're there.  Multiple locations, see individual store schedules for details.  

  • Saturday, February 11 from 10a.m.-noon - Kids Club Valentine's Day Cookies - Kids ages 3 and up can decorate cookies while you shop in the store. Sign up online or just drop in, and the cost is $2 per project with supplies included. 
  • Saturday, February 11 from 1-3:00 p.m. - Valentine's MAKE Event - Buy cards and use free provided supplies like googly eyes to make cute, family-friendly card projects to say "eye love you."

10. Go to Kidville's Valentine's Day Party in the Woodlands on February 10. The party is for children up to age 6, and there are crafts, snacks, a photo booth, and open play in the gym. The cost is $5 for members, and the visitor's fee is $15. Children under 6 months old are FREE.

11. Party at Lakeshore Learning Valentine's Day Celebration at the Houston, Friendswood, and The Woodlands locations on Saturday, February 11. This is a FREE event for kids ages 2-12 to explore the joys of kindness and caring by making a Valentine Mailbox and a Kindness Catcher, as well as writing a personalized book about kindness, and listening to hourly stories on acceptance, respect, emotions, and more. 

12. Attend the Have-A-Heart Valentine's Day Storytime at Central Library in Conroe on Wednesday, February 8 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Children up to age 6 and their adult caregivers are invited to celebrate Valentine's Day with stories, activities, songs, crafts, and rhymes about favorite pets. Have a snack and bring a donation of pet food for the Montgomery County Animal Shelter. 

13. Make some crafts and enjoy the Valentine's Events at Clear Lake City-County Freeman Branch Library.

  • Thursday, February 9 - Valentine's Crafts - Children ages 3 to 12 are invited to make Valentine's Day crafts. Get a ticket at the Kid's Information Desk 30 minutes before the program begins. 
  • Saturday, February 11 - Block Print Valentine's - Use the tools in the Innovation Lab to make block stamps and create custom Valentine's cards using ink and paints. 

Or the Valentine's Events at Stewart Branch Library in Montgomery. 

  • The week of February 6-11 - Valentine's for Veterans - Make cards and crafts for veterans from the Lone Star Veterans Group all week.
  • Wednesday, February 8 - Toddler Valentines Story Time and Craft - A special Valentine's Story Time with a story, songs, and a craft. For walking toddlers up to age 3. 
  • Wednesday, February 8 - PreK Valentines Story Time and Craft - A special Valentine's Story Time with a story, songs, and a craft. For preschoolers ages 3 - 5. 
  • Monday, February 13 - Teen Cookies for Cops - Show appreciation for the Montgomery County Police Department by decorating Valentine's Day cookies for the local police department. For teens ages 13-17.
