When Is Winter in NYC?

The winter season officially starts with the solstice on or around December 21–the shortest day of the year. While the cold temperatures and snowy conditions have been a little less predictable in recent years, chilly weather usually starts in December, with the coldest (and often iciest) conditions hitting the city in January and February. It is also useful to know that the city's grid-like design and tall buildings can create very blustery conditions, especially in Manhattan. Add in the winter wind-chill factor, and rounding the corner on certain blocks will take your breath away.

What to Wear in NYC in Winter

Regardless of recent temperature fluctuations during the winter in NYC, it's still a good idea to pack for zero to sub-zero temps and bring lots of layers to adjust to changing weather patterns. Think warm sweaters, thermal long johns, a winter parka, plus a cozy hat, scarf, and gloves. Most importantly, comfortable, waterproof walking boots are a must as you'll cover many miles, often navigating puddles and slushy conditions. Also, keep in mind that the weather is generally more wintry when you travel north of the city, so pack accordingly if you're planning a side trip upstate.

Best Things To Do in NYC in Winter

Family fun abounds in the city year-round, and the winter season is no exception. Find the perfect balance with an itinerary that combines outdoor and indoor excursions.

Start with a visit to a (hopefully snowy) park like Central Park or Prospect Park, or take a spin around one of NYC's scenic outdoor ice skating rinks.

Afterward, warm up at one of the city's best children's museums, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, with its FREE art-and-play space, or the American Museum of Natural History, which just welcomed a star stegosaurus to its collection.

Of course, there's food along the way for every palate and occasion, from the best all-day breakfasts to places with the most scenic views, plus plenty of spots where kids eat FREE. If you need to warm up, be sure to keep this list of the best hot chocolate spots handy.

What are the Top Annual Events During the Winter?

NYC is a dreamy place to plan the perfect Christmas itinerary, with all the glitter and twinkling lights you could hope for, but once the festive activities have come to a close, there are still plenty of fun events to check out.

In early January, El Museo del Barrio hosts the Three Kings Day Parade, a neighborhood event that has been held for over 40 years. The celebration features a variety of kid-friendly performances, a parade, and a community celebration at the museum.

Don't miss the Chinese Lunar New Year festivities in Chinatown when dragon and firecracker parades fill the streets and special holiday dishes appear on the menus of many of the neighborhood's restaurants. In February, The Brooklyn Academy of Music hosts the city’s largest public tribute to Martin Luther King Jr., including speakers, live music, and other performances.
