If you've got a child in public school, you live by the public school calendar. Many local NYC preschools follow the public school schedule, too. The New York City Department of Education's calendar for the 2025-2026 school year is below, and you'll want to bookmark it now for reference—and to help with planning family vacations and school break camp coverage.

Once again, there will be no snow days. Plan on logging your NYC kiddos on for a day of remote learning whenever buildings are closed for snow or other emergencies.

When Is the First Day of School in 2025-2026? 

New York City public school kids head back to school on Thursday, September 4, 2025. 

When Is Winter Break?

The December winter break runs from Wednesday, December 24, 2025, through Thursday, January 1, 2026, setting up a one-day school week to open up the new year. You'll recall that in 2024-2025, there was a similar situation with a school day planned for Monday, December 23, 2024, and a local schoolkid successfully petitioned the DOE to cancel the day's classes.  

When Is Spring Break?

The NYC public school spring break is scheduled for Thursday, April 2 through Friday, April 10, 2026. With the addition of the second weekend, parents will have 11 days of fun to fill during spring break 2026.

When Is the Last Day of School? 

The last day of school for NYC public school students in 2026 is Friday, June 26, 2026.

Tuesday, September 23-Wednesday, September 24: Rosh Hashanah, schools closed

Thursday, October 2: Yom Kippur, schools closed

Monday, October 13: Italian Heritage/Indigenous Peoples Day, schools closed

Monday, October 20: Diwali, schools closed

Tuesday, November 4: Election Day, students do not attend school

Tuesday, November 11: Veterans Day, schools closed

Thursday, November 27-Friday, November 28: Thanksgiving Recess, schools closed

Wednesday, December 24-Thursday, January 1: Winter Recess, schools closed

Monday, January 19: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, schools closed

Monday, February 16-Friday, February 20: Midwinter Recess, schools closed

Friday, March 20: Eid al-Fitr, schools closed

Thursday, April 2-Friday, April 10: Spring Recess, schools closed

Monday, May 25: Memorial Day, schools closed

Wednesday, May 27: Eid al-Adha, schools closed

Thursday, June 4: Anniversary Day/Chancellor's Day, students do not attend

Friday, June 5: Clerical Day for elementary, middle, K-12 schools and D75 programs, students in these programs do not attend

Friday, June 19: Juneteenth, schools closed

Friday, June 26: Last day of school for all students.
