Weekly Wrap Up: Fall Culture Preview for NYC Families, Maker Faire and New Mommy Poppins Sites
Even though autumn doesn't officially start until September 23, we were all about fall this week. We began updating our Fall Fun Guide, and shared our picks for the best concerts, museum exhibits and theater shows for kids this coming season.
Our two new sites in Boston and Los Angeles are picking up speed. Boston highlighted six cool exhibits for families and in LA they're already looking ahead to Halloween with a roundup of pumpkin patches. Let your friends in those cities know that they can sign up for their respective newsletters.
And that's just a bit of what's going on. Here's what we covered this week on Mommy Poppins in NYC, New Jersey, Long Island and Connecticut.
OUR LATEST VIDEOS
New York City
We started the week with a heartfelt post by our founder, in which she gave a cursory history of Mommy Poppins and announced the launch of the Boston and Los Angeles sites.
Then we kicked off our fall culture preview. We rounded up 14 groovy kids' concerts, five of which are free.
Up next, eight family-friendly museum exhibits, including a space-themed installation at the American Museum of Natural History.
Finally, we spotlighted nine children's shows, including the return of the popular Knuffle Bunny musical.
We also wrote about two awesome annual events happening this weekend. On Sunday, lit lovers can hit the free Brooklyn Book Festival, which has two areas specifically for kids.
And all weekend long you can experience the awesome World Maker Faire at the New York Hall of Science. Practically the entire Mommy Poppins staff is going; it's that cool!
Additional best bets for the weekend include the Little Red Lighthouse Festival, NYC Apple Day and the opening of Jane's Carousel in Brooklyn Bridge Park.
New Jersey
Across the Hudson, we rounded up wonderful after-school classes.
We also reviewed the powerful CBS News/48 Hours special "Bullying: Words Can Kill," which airs this Friday.
Things to do this weekend include Apple Day in Princeton, the grand opening of the Dinosaurium at the Garden State Discovery Museum and the 1920s Country Fair and Harvest Festival in Morristown.
Long Island
Our Long Island writers also have autumn on the brain. They rounded up fall festivals and and fairs on the isle.
Weekend highlights include the annual Italian Festival in Hempstead, the Bayville Waterside Festival and Kidsfest in Old Westbury.
Connecticut
In CT, you can find a great selection of after-school programs in Fairfield County.
We also added a roundup of pick-your-own apple farms in Western Connecticut to our Apple Picking Guide.
Weekend events include the Orange Country Fair, Open Farm Day at Sunny Valley Preserve in New Milford and the Woodbury Lions Club Duck Race.
Los Angeles & Boston
Over on the West Coast, the story's the same. The new site has roundups of pumpkin patches and after-school classes as well as excellent weekend events.
Boston's got cool museum exhibits and the best things to do this weekend.
Cool Deals and Giveaways
The CT site is giving away tickets to the local Renaissance Faire. You have until Friday at 5pm to enter!
The Boston site is giving away tickets to the CD release party for local singer-songwriter Alastair Moock. You have until Monday to enter.
Our fall classes sale continues at Poppins Perks. We've got major discounts on a ton of amazing offerings, including chess, tennis, golf, Moey's Music Party, theater and more.
