Things to Do for NYC Kids and Families April 30-May 1, 2011: Tribeca Family Street Fair, Cherry Blossom Fest and Kindiefest

4/27/11 - By Stephanie Ogozalek

Do you enjoy making decisions? We hope so, because there are so many amazing activities this weekend, including highly anticipated annual favorites, you've got some tough choices ahead of you.

Festivals are the big draw. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Sakura Matsuri: Cherry Blossom Festival, the Hippo Playground Spring Fair, the Five Boro Bike Fest and a couple of better-late-than-never Earth Day celebrations are all happening this weekend. For many, the main event is the legendary Tribeca Film Festival Family Street Fair on Saturday. If you attend, make sure you drop by to say hi to the Mommy Poppins team: Our tent will be located on the west side of Greenwich Street at Jay Street.

There are also a lot of rockin' concerts this weekend, including Kindiefest, David Weinstone and Music for Aardvarks, Junior Jam and Recess Monkey. (Check out our Poppins Perk deal for half price tickets to the Junior Jam show)

Speaking of monkeys, you can also check out what's new at the city's six zoos (we're counting the Aquarium), the highlight being the Bronx Zoo's annual Animal Tales Extravaganza fest.

And if that's not enough for you, the Mommy Poppins Events Calendar is full of other options like storytimes, stage shows, exhibits and more. Whatever you end up doing, we wish you a fabulous weekend!

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

All Weekend

Sakura Matsuri: Cherry Blossom Festival – Prospect Heights
The Brooklyn Botanic Garden hosts this colorful celebration of Japanese culture. The blooms are absolutely stunning, and so are many of the visitors, who come decked out in their best Anime outfits. There will also be live Taiko drumming, martial arts demos, tea ceremonies, a Cosplay (costume play) fashion show, Japanese pop bands and kids' origami workshops. FREE with museum admission

Don't expect Disney's version of the fairy tale. The New Acting Company's take is comical and campy, and the cast is made up of professional adult actors and young students from the troupe's acting classes. The title character learns to rely on herself during her journey, and best of all, she doesn't need to marry a prince to live happily ever after. $18 in advance, $20 at the door.

Arbor Day Weekend – Prospect Park
Celebrate the trees that dot Prospect Park with crafts, activities and nature exhibits. FREE

Recess Monkey – Prospect Heights or the Upper West Side
There are a lot of cool concerts this weekend, but we're particularly excited about this Seattle band, which is made up of schoolteachers! The group's swinging into town for two gigs. Catch the guys for FREE on Saturday at the central branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, or for $15 at 92YTribeca on Sunday.
