Tips for Enjoying the 2012 New York International Auto Show with Kids

3/15/12 - By charlotte

If you have a little car lover in your home, then this spring break you'll want to steer them to the 2012 New York International Auto Show. More than 1,000 eye-catching vehicles will pack the massive Jacob K. Javits Center, and big-name makers are scheduled to debut new models,

While the Auto Show isn't tailored for families, there are some great kids' attractions, like futuristic prototypes and show cars that inspire your imagination for the cars of tomorrow. There's even a flying car this year (no joke!)

Here are our seven tips for enjoying the Auto Show with kids.

1. This may go without saying but the Javits Center is huge and the Auto Show gets crowded. Make sure you have a game plan (click here to see a schedule of events and here for a floor plan), and choose a meeting spot in case anyone gets separated from the group.

2. Bring food and beverages. Snacks are smart, a full lunch is better. Yes the Javits sells food, but you won't like the prices, long lines or limited selection, and the nearest restaurants are a good hike away.

3. Don't forget your cameras, flips, phones, etc. Filming and photography is encouraged!

4. Strollers are allowed and kids under 2 are free.

5. Get the kids excited for the show by researching what they're going to see. There are a bunch of cool videos on the New York Auto Show's YouTube page. There's also an iPhone app you can download that features maps, schedules, directions, exhibit information and more. Plus, the show's official website is jam-packed with info, and you can find the event on Facebook and Twitter.

6. Some exhibitors have activities specifically for kids. In the past, Ford's hands-on exhibits have been a hit with the younger set.

7. Choose your transportation to the Javits wisely. You're going to be doing a lot of walking at the show, so don't waste your energy on trekking from the subway. The M34 crosstown bus stops right outside of the convention center.

Although her heart is in New York, Charlotte and her husband-to-be are on a quest to visit all 50 states (we'll have set foot in at least 33 of them by the end of 2011!). More About Charlotte

What do you read when you aren't reading Mommy Poppins?
I'm one of the few twenty-somethings that still reads magazines. I'm talking print. New York is my favorite by far. I do go online, of course. I frequently visit Serious Eats, Slate, Gawker and various tumblrs.

What do you want to do when you grow up?
Be an editor! A chef! A travel writer! I'm still pretty undecided.

What's your favorite thing about raising kids in NYC?
I'm not a mom—yet. But I was raised here, so I can say with confidence that families can do anything and expose their kids to everything in this amazing city.
