8/28/13 - By Brandee Gilmore

So you want to shake it up this Labor Day in Fairfield County.  You're bored at the thought of the beaches, and not waiting around for a backyard BBQ invite.  Oh, no.  You want options.  So here you go: a Labor Day 2013 grab bag, that will work come rain or shine this weekend.

Newtown Labor Day Parade
Come out and support the quaint and quintissential New England town the rest of the country had never heard of before last December.  The Grand Marshal is the Town itself, with the theme 'We are Newtown - Marching Strong".  They claim to have the largest Labor Day Parade in the state, so it would be smart to arrive early for the 10am start. The parade winds from the Soldiers and Sailors monument at the top of Main Street, south past the flag pole and onto Glover and Queen streets.  Parking and shuttles are available.  When the parade ends, head toward Queen St. for fun at the Labor Day Fair at Newtown Middle School, from 9am - 1pm.

Blues, Views & BBQs Festival
This 2-day extravaganza transports the deep south to the shores of the Saugatuck, featuring saucy blues bands and spicy baby backs.  Woodfired BBQ, cooking competitions, pie and handcrafted beer will keep y'all full (and don't miss the rib and pie eating contests!), while the Kids Corral keeps 'em busy.  Kids 12 & under are free; 1-day admission for adults is $25.  Students 13-20 pay $15.  Free parking throughout Westport.  You'll have no choice but to just roll yourselves to the beach on Monday after this!

Bruce Museum
Does your teen need a dose of reality?  On Saturday, the Bruce Museum will open a new collection of Realist prints titled, 'Telling American History.'  Your kids may recognize the name Edward Hopper, and here, you'll be able to introduce them to some of his contemporaries from the Ashcan school and American Scene.  What a way to celebrate the American worker on Labor Day!

Car Show
Got a gearhead or two in your group?  Norwalk's American Legion Post 12 will sponsor an Antique & Classic Car Show on September 1, from 9am - 3pm.  If the girlie girls in the family aren't so keen, have them pull together a Great Gatsby inspired get-up and pose for some swell pics with the cars of the era ... create a fun calendar for Dad's garage!

First in Flight
You may have heard that you can't change history ... but it's not entirely true in Bridgeport.  That's where historians are now saying flight first happened -- not with the Wright Brothers in Kitty Hawk.  Thanks to new photographic evidence, Gustave Whitehead is getting the credit he's deserved since August 14, 1901 when he flew his aircraft "#21" along the Fairfield-Bridgeport town line.  You can see a half-size model of the #21 hanging in the Discovery Museum's library -- a Labor Day diversion for the record books.
