Free & Fun Things to Do this Weekend with NYC Kids: Science Festival, Howl!, Whitney Family Day, Pop-Up Pianos June 1-2
Since much of Memorial Day weekend was a washout, we're hoping that sprinkler and beach season starts in earnest this Saturday, especially since the MTA is finally restoring service on the A and S lines to Rockaway Beach! Looking for dry fun? There are a bunch of FREE festivals including two of our annual favorites: the Great Howl! Out Loud Kids Carnival in Tompkins Square Park and Washington Square Park's Ultimate Science Street Fair (that's my son in the photo at the 2010 fest).
Other cool activities include a walking (and eating) tour of the Lower East Side, an art-filled family day at the Whitney and the return of the FREE Sing for Hope pianos that are popping up all around town.
These are just a few of the great things going on this weekend. All of our best bets are below. You can find additional options in our Event Calendar and our Summer Fun Guide. And if you're looking to plan out your entire month, check out the new edition of our NYC Go List, which highlights the absolute best things to do with kids throughout June.

Warning: Some of the performances in other parts of the park get a little risque so you may want to stay in the designated family area. FREE

The Ultimate Science Street Fair – Greenwich Village
One of my family's annual must-do events, this amazing fest in Washington Square Park is the climactic offering of the massive multiday World Science Festival. Attractions include tons of booths with hands-on science activities, crafts and experiments, live animal demos and a carnival-style Math Midway. Be sure to catch the shows by the traveling scientists from Philadelphia’s Franklin Institute; they're awesome and keep kids on the edge of their seats as they play with fire and homemade cannons. Since it gets crowded quickly, arrive as early as possible to try to avoid long lines. FREE

Strawberry picking season is in full swing and there are plenty of nearby farms where families enjoy this spring activity. My favorite is Lewin Farms on Long Island. It's always a good idea to call before you head out to make sure they're open and strawberries are still available.
Don't forget: There's even more fun to be found in the Mommy Poppins Event Calendar.
