This weekend will be our first really warm weekend and as if the event planners are somehow hooked up with Mother Nature, this weekend also seems to be the first weekend of Spring Fairs and Carnival events. So get your t-shirts out of the closet, leave your big bills at home and head to these wallet-friendly celebrations of spring. All these outdoor carnivals, festivals, kite-making and biking events are making me crave ice cream, the beach and the smell of sun block already…

NYU Medical Center Spring Carnival

New York University School of Medicine will be hosting its 5th annual Spring Carnival to benefit Special Olympics New York. This years event will feature carnival games, prizes, clowns, live music, face painting and food and refreshments from local vendors.

The NYU Spring Carnival also includes a silent auction. Each year hundreds of people attend the event to have some fun and help raise money for the athletes of Special Olympics New York.

Please join the Friends of Bleecker Playground celebrate spring with a Family Dance Party. DJ, dancing, art projects, photos and pot lluck goodies!

In true neighborhood spirit, we are asking families to contribute to our pot luck dessert table. Bring a small plate of cookies or treats to share. (individually portioned please)

This event also went on last weekend, and you readers wrote in and said how much you loved it and that it really is worth the 9 bucks. This is the last weekend it is going on, so be sure to check it out. Join the Queens County Farm for a carnival in the apple orchard! Carnival rides, midway games food, hayrides, petting zoo and a Magic Show (show times: 12,1,2,3 in the pavilion). Admission includes all carnival rides. Food and games are extra.

New York Family Magazine is hosting two more Classes and Activities Expos in April. The Expos will cover the gamut of the many classes and enrichment programs directed at children from six months to 12-years old, from Mommy & Me to After-School Enrichment in Winter and Springtime months.

In addition: There will be face painters, family photographers, goodie bags, a magician and a number of schools experts will be on hand to answer parents questions about nursery schools, and public and private schools.

Kite Flight: Paper Play—7th Annual Kite-Making Workshop

Socrates Sculpture Park and The Noguchi Museum are proud to present the seventh annual kite-making workshop and flying event. This free hands-on workshop will take place at Socrates Sculpture Park and welcomes children of all ages to participate. Using recycled paper, children and their families can draw inspiration from the Park's fantastic view of the Manhattan skyline to build and decorate a kite, and then fly it in the Park.

Advance registration is not required, but space is limited, so come early! The workshop will be held - rain or shine - in the education area at Socrates Sculpture Park. The workshop is free and all materials and supplies will be provided.

NYC Bike Month Kick-Off

Headlined by Future Shock, an Indo-Caribbean crew with thumping sound system bikes, QMA and Transportation Alternatives invite bike gangs, art bikes, bike advocacy groups, modders, bike clubs and bike crews (and families and kids, too!) for an outdoor celebration to close out Queens International 4 (QI4) with a bang! There will be bike riding lessons and free helmet giveaways in the afternoon and BMX bike demos taking place inside the museum utilizing QI4 artist Ryan Humphrey's 100-ft series of ramps.

Also see the Human Sculpture performance by Chin Chih Yang, hear SP Weather Station talks in the Panorama, take part in Derick Melander’s interactive clothing sculpture Into the Fold and ride art bikes created by artists Colin McMullan, Mary Mattingly and Jonathan Bran, and listen to live music. Flushtopia

The Flushtopians dismantled a building built for the World’s Fair and created living, floating, man-made islands, born out of an open and collaborative process of artists. This Sunday, they’ll be on the man-made islands both days; grilling and boating and enjoying the unexpected paradise. The event is indeed kid-friendly and there will be free boat rentals to go and visit the islands.

26th Annual Hippo Playground Spring Fair

Join the Hippo Playground Project for their 26th Annual Spring Fair and help raise essential funds for Hippo Playground maintenance and programs. Activities for children will include a jumping castle, pony rides, petting zoo, a maze, face painting, games, prizes and more!
