11/11/10 - By Shari Simpson

I have one word for you people: CHOCOLATE. Do you really need to read any further? Well, if the thought of the 13th Annual New York Chocolate Show does not send shivers down your spine like it does mine and force you to haul yourself into Manhattan for the day, there are other fun and free events in New Jersey this weekend. Gingerbread House making, teddy bear picnics and geocaching round out our favorites list, but hey… you know where you’ll find me. See you by the truffles!

The New York Chocolate Show (New York City)

The largest event in the world devoted exclusively to chocolate, the making, the baking, the sniffing, and of course, the eating. A Kids Zone presented by the Young Chefs Academy sounds like a blast and kids twelve years and younger are FREE—with an adult ticket purchase of $28 in advance, $30 at the door. Still, “free” and “chocolate” in the same sentence just makes me happy. Thursday, November 11 through Saturday, November 13 from 10am to 7pm and Sunday, November 14 from 10am to 6pm. Call 646.292.1138 for more information.

Gingerbread House Demonstration and Workshop (Hamilton)

Grounds for Sculpture, an incredibly cool place in its own right, is extra cool this weekend with a Gingerbread House demonstration (FREE with admission to the park of Adults/$12, Kids/$8) and a make-your-own-gingerbread-yumminess workshop ($20/Members, $25/Non-Members plus admission). Pre-registration is required for the latter and don’t forget to bring your own icing spatula and pastry tips. Because we all have those things just lying around. Saturday, November 13 at 12 noon for the demonstration, 1:30pm for the workshop. Call 609-586-0616 for more info.

Open Arms Family Night (Cherry Hill)

We love the Garden State Discovery Museum for stuff just like this: they are offering a FREE night of open play and discovery for kids on the autism spectrum and their families. To register, email your name, contact info, and number of guests to onthego@discoverymuseum.com or call 856-424-1233.

National American Teddy Bear Day Picnic (Madison)

Did you know there was such a thing as National American Teddy Bear Day? Me neither. But the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts did, and they are having a Teddy Bear Day Picnic with stories, crafts and teddy bear snacks. Saturday, November 13th from 1pm to 3pm. Admission $3/personal, advice registration recommended. For information call 973-377-2982 x12.

Cache In, Trash Out (Stillwater)

If you’ve never taken your kids geocaching, Fairview Lakes YMCA’s event is a great way to start. “Cache In, Trash Out” is an ongoing environmental initiative supported by the worldwide geocaching community. Search for treasures, clean up the area, hike, and boat for FREE. Call 80- 686-1166 for more information.

Thanksgiving Harvest Home (Morristown)

Celebrate Thanksgiving the 1919 way at Fosterfields Living Historical Farm. Take a wagon ride, watch some food preparations, do crafts and come out thankful that you live in a time of modern plumbing. Sunday, November 14 from noon to 4pm. Call 973-326-7645 for more information and fees.
