Family Friendly Theater Shows in Fairfield County

10/1/14 - By Jacqueline Miller

One of the great things about raising kids in Fairfield County is proximity to New York City and the wealth of cultural activities on offer there in a variety of price ranges (check out this post for suggestions on the Best 5 Off-Broadway Shows for NYC Kids). But as fall heats up with back to school activities and weekend soccer games or football jamborees, sometimes it's nice to be able to stick close to home and explore the local theater options--lucky for us there are quite a few!

Most of these theater series are scheduled into spring, and tickets are available as individual or multi-show packages. However, more popular options--we're looking at you Lightning Thief--will sell out well in advance so reserve your tickets now so that you don't miss out.

1) The 2014-15 Family Festivities series at Westport Country Playhouse has a variety of shows that are geared towards kids from age 3 to 13. Starting off with a free kick off party on November 9th that will include games and kids activities (as well as offer discounts to future performances), the Westport Country Playhouse offers monthly performances on Sundays. Tickets are $20 each and generally include a craft or other kids' activity before the show. My avid Percy Jackson reader is already looking forward to the musical production of The Lightning Thief (which opened to rave reviews in NYC this summer). Other performances include Curious George, Dog Loves Books, and Frosty, just in time for the holidays.

2) Tucked away on the grounds of Fairfield University, the Quick Center for the Arts has an annual Family Fun series that kicks off with The Berenstain Bears LIVE on October 5th and continues again in March. Tickets are $15 each and shows start at 3 pm.

3) Curtain Call doesn't have a children's series per se, but many of the wonderful productions in the Kweskin Theatre will appeal to children, including this fall's Meet Me in St. Louis and A Merry Mulberry Street Musical. In addition, Curtain Call offers some terrific classes and workshops for kids (something my own kids enjoyed this past winter break), in addition to their Summer Youth Theatre program.

4) Downtown Cabaret in Bridgeport has both main stage and children's productions. This fall, they'll offer their interpretation of Peter Pan, Jr., an abbreviated version of the full musical, as well as a Family Fun Trio and Rapunzel. Tickets start at $23.

5) Also in Bridgeport, the Bijou Theatre is a multi-functional performance space that offers concerts, films, and theatre programs. Their children's series includes three theatrical productions, beginning with The Witch, The Broom, and The Cauldron in October and continuing with Santa's Crazier Christmas, the sequel to last year's sold out Santa's Crazy Christmas Spectacular. The Bijou also hosts the New England Ballet Company's 2014-15 Children's Series, which kicks off with Peter and the Wolf in September,
