These spooky and simple ideas for turning everyday snacks like hot dogs and brownies into some spine-tingling treats for Halloween will have you and your kids dancing the Monster Mash. Easy enough for a kids' party activity, or parents can whip a batch up for a fun twist on the pre-trick-or-treating dinner. Either way, you won't even need to dress up to be a hero this Halloween.
1. Mummy Dogs
These spooky snacks are really just gussied up pigs-in-blankets. To make them, simply make 3 slices into a raw hotdog. First slice the bottom half of the frank into two 'legs' then make two angled slices into the top quarter creating two 'arms'. Wrap the arms, legs, torso and head of the hot dog man with raw cresent roll or puff pastry dough till it looks like a mummy. Place mummy dog on a cookie sheet and bake as directed on the dough package. Serve with ketchup and mustard for dipping.
2. Pumpkin Hand Pies
I make these fun melty sandwiches at least once for my son each Halloween season. Cut identical shapes with a cookie cutter into rolled out pie dough (purchased or home made is up to you). I use pumpkin cutters, but you can use any shapes you like, as long as you have two identical pieces for each sandwich. Layer sliced ham and cheese on the bottom shape, cover it with a top and crimp the edges to seal. With a sharp knife make a couple slashes in the top shape to let out steam, place on a cookie sheet, and bake according to the pie dough directions. You can play around with the fillings too, depending on what your brood likes.
3. Coffin Brownies
And for dessert! These creepy coffins are a two-step project. Step 1: Make molded white chocolate skeletons. Melt chocolate over a double boiler till smooth, pour into skelton molds, place in refrigerator for an hour or two till the chocolate is firm and hard, then pop skeltons from mold. Step 2: Bake or purchase a tray of brownies; cut brownies into rectanglular or coffin shapes. Then top each brownie with a spooky skeleton.
