Free and Fun Things to Do With Kids in CT This Weekend: Parades, Vintage Baseball and Sand Jam

6/28/12 - By Christine

There’s nothing that kicks off the start of summer like a good Independence Day celebration. July 4th is a Wednesday this year, so the festivities begin this weekend and run all the way through to next weekend. I love a good fireworks show, but my favorite thing to do as those rockets blast off is to look down at the awestruck faces of my children as they light up with each burst of color. Check out our list of Firework Celebrations in CT or our specific links for  Fairfield County and Hartford County displays that are sure to dazzle your entire family.

Step back in time and watch baseball as it was meant to be played. The Friends of Vintage Baseball will use rules, costumes, customs and equipment from the 1860s in this living history event. In between innings, kids are invited up to home base to swing a wood bat at a lemon peel ball and interact with uniformed ballists. This free family event takes place at the Hartford Base Ball Grounds and will repeat on Saturdays through August 18th.

On July 4th families have two great children's parades to choose from. In both parades children bring their decorated bikes, scooters and wagons for a patriotic ride.
