Many families are packing up and heading out of town this weekend as many CT schools begin their Spring Break. However, you don't need to go far to have fun. We've got the scoop on many fun family events happening close to home.  Take a look at our favorite Spring Activities in Central CT to get you started.

Catch some minor league baseball as the Bridgeport Bluefish  and New Britain Rock Cats  gear up for the 2013 season this weekend.

It's Educator's Weekend at the Mystic Seaport .  Teachers are invited to bring their families for free to enjoy all that the Seaport has to offer.  Be sure to bring your employee ID to receive free admission for yourself and up to 3 guests.

Earth Day is on Monday April 22nd, but you don't have to wait until then to check out some really cool activities that celebrate our planet.  At Earth Day 2013 at Meigs Point Nature Center in Madison families will enjoy free crafts, demonstrations, environmental exhibits and more.  The Beardsley Zoo presents Party For The Planet, which focuses on encouraging local, organic, earth friendly choices as a way of promoting better health for our planet and ourselves. 

Shopping consignment sales is a way to "shop green"  while also saving yourself some major green.  Great deals on gently used children's clothing, books, toys and baby equipment can be found this weekend at the CT Kids Closet Sale in Danbury and the CircleMint Children's Consignment Event in Madison.

The JCC in Sherman is offering The Bear Reality, a family event where you can learn about bear habits and habitats. 

Last week I brought my son's Cub Scout Den to the McCarthy Observatory in New Milford.  The boys had a great time learning about the solar system and how to use a telescope.  This weekend they host one of their Second Saturday Stars where they will be discussing the search for life on Mars as you use the telescope to view the night sky.

The 40th Annual Cherry Blossom Festival in New Haven celebrates the planting of 72 Yoshino Japanese Cherry Blossom trees in 1973 by the New Haven Historic Commission.  What started out as a modest event has turned into a celebration that attracts approximately 5,000 participants each year.  This year's line up includes entertainment, food, art, children's activities and more.

Stop by the Drunken Palate in Niantic on Sunday for one of their Mini Artist Workshops, where kids can create a different project each week.  This week kids will be making a Peek-A-Boo Fairy.

Gather with fellow poets and poetry enthusiasts at the CT Poetry Party at Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington.  Enjoy poetry readings, live music and potluck refreshments.

The Connecticut Chili Classic takes place at the SONO Marketplace on Sunday.  Bring your appetite and place your vote for the best chili.  If you're not familiar with the SONO Marketplace, be sure to read our recent post detailing what you can expect to find on a visit to this new converted warehouse which houses 40 vendors offering gourmet food, gifts, clothing, art and toys.
