Last-minute Summer Camp Options for Boston Families, Part II

It’s comforting to know that we’re not the only ones who didn’t make summer camp plans for our kids back in February – apparently we’re in good company. Our readers have asked for more last-minute camp options, and here’s our answer: a sizable list of camps for kids from preschooler to teen, with activities ranging from theater to sports, pop music to outdoor camping adventures.

Read on to find out about eight more excellent summer camp options for the children of professional procrastinators. (We don’t recommend waiting any longer, though, because the spaces are filling up fast!)

The Tennis Academy at Harvard is often recommended by parents and is run by Harvard’s head men’s and women’s tennis coaches. During the one-week sessions, kids ages 4-17, starting from all ability levels, learn tennis skills and more. There are morning, extended morning, and full day options. During the extended morning, kids get to choose from activities like chess, checkers, kickball, dodgeball, other recreational games, and arts and crafts.

Cape Ann Summer Playcamp

Together, Henry Allen TheatreWorks and Cape Ann Art Haven offer Summer PlayCamp, a summer theatre and art experience with Cape Ann-themed workshops for ages 6-13. Kids craft a short play, including the design and creation of their own sets, costumes and props. At the end of each two-week session, they perform their collaborative piece for family and friends at Fort Stage Park.

Gymnastics Academy of Boston

The Cambridge location of the Gymnastics Academy of Boston offers a fun and active camp where kids of all skill levels learn gymnastics, do arts and crafts (younger campers), go swimming, play games and participate in other physically engaging activities.

Wildwood Teen Trip: Discover the Adirondacks

On this canoeing trek, a small, coed group of teens and their guides will paddle through the confluence of Lake George and Lake Champlain. They will swim, camp, cook over the fire and learn about the natural and cultural history of the eastern Adirondacks.

Super Soccer Stars

Super Soccer Stars offers a wealth of summer soccer opportunities, so you can choose the summer experience that is the best fit for your child. Available programs include:

  • Weekly classes (ages 2-8)
  • Indoor Kick and Craft (2 ½ hours of indoor soccer games and activities and arts and crafts; ages 2.5 – 3 and 4-5)
  • Fun in the Sun (1- and 2-hour skill-building games and activities for ages 2-5)
  • Kick It ( 3- to 4-hour days for children who want to build soccer skills in a fun atmosphere; ages 6-12)
  • Mini League (short skills session + 50 minutes of coach-supervised games, ages 3-9)

The Skating Academy’s Summer Camp

Skaters can learn new skills from top coaches and accelerate their skating skills over the summer. On-ice training focuses on strengthening fundamental skills for young skaters, including edges, jumps, and spins. Off-ice training focuses on overall muscle strengthening and core conditioning, such as yoga and Pilates-type exercises. Campers also enjoy daily creative arts, crafts, and games.

Gather Here Summer Camp

Gather Here fashion and fiber camps give children a full range of fiber "super powers." Campers learn to use a sewing machine and make projects like a messenger bag, a pair of shorts, and a t-shirt, learning techniques like installing a zipper and finishing seams and choosing their own fabrics from a wide array of products.

Camp Pop Star

Limelight Stage + Studio’s half-day music camps guide campers through a gradual series of activities that focus on the discovery of their own “inner Rock Star.” The fundamentals of singing as well of some major performance points like rhythm, diction and the expression of emotion are covered. Instructors use a combination of physically engaging activities such as interpretive movement, storytelling and group listening activities to engage each child’s visual, audio and tactical senses. The workshops culminate with a performance for friends and family.
