We could all use a little bright spot during these droll winter months. For fun little pick-me-up, head over to Brooklyn's family-friendly Industry City, which has unveiled The Pool, a new large-scale, outdoor interactive installation from Jen Lewin, the artist behind Reflect which illuminated Domino Park in 2021.

The installation consists of giant, concentric circles created from more than 100 circular pads that light up when you interact with them. Visitors are encouraged to walk, dance, jump, and play with the piece as they experiment with the swirling effects of light and color. Inspired by Australian tidal pools, the artist created the mesh-network technology and code that allows the platforms to respond to touch.

On a recent visit, my 5 year old had a blast running around and jumping on the pads to see what light compositions he could produce. The colors changed from shades of red, pink, and white to blues and greens when he jumped on the pads. We suggest visiting around 6pm—as we did—the setting sun really made the light stand out.

There are plenty of pads to play on and room to roam in the installation.

There were plenty of other children who all seemed mesmerized with The Pool, but it didn't feel too crowded, and it felt COVID-safe since the installation is outside. Even the grown-ups were having fun trying out the different light combinations they could make.

The Pool is part the The Collision Project, IC's campus-wide arts initiative that supports and promotes the works of emerging artists. Industry City plans to display more works from contemporary artists in the coming months.

The Pool is open daily through Monday, March 28, from 3pm-9pm. Find it in Courtyard 1/2 of Industry City.
