New York Magazine published their Best of NY issue last week. You can check it out online. Best of NY Kids features "under the radar" playspots, in this case, apparently, defining best as least-crowded. But, the Brooklyn-based Lava dance classes recommended as best fitness sound pretty cool.
If you've never read MetroDad, you should. The NYC-based blogger's most recent post is a bunch of hilarious short thoughts that had me wishing I used Depends. Particularly his "THREE PHRASES I NEVER THOUGHT WOULD COME OUT OF MY MOUTH".
In the Time Out NY Kids blog, they recommend the new show at PS 1 for kids, "WACK!: Art and the Feminist Revolution.??? particularly Marta Minujin??™s ???Soft Gallery??? which is basically a padded room full of mattresses that kids can jump on to their hearts' delight.
Over at the craft blog, Nini Makes, are excellent instructions for making your own personalized paper dolls. This could be a really fun project to do with an older child or as an excellent present/keepsake/fun project for you with a baby or toddler. Using a digital camera and printer, you can easily make multiple sets to share with grandparents, as birthday cards, etc.
In case you thought funky, oddball NYC was gone, A Child Grows in Brooklyn shares the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Company, a store founded by Dave Eggers. As she describes, "The store sells capes, grappling hooks, antimatter, and more and all the proceeds from the store go directly to 826NYC, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6-18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write."
If you're already freaked out about college admissions, take heart; a NY Times article states Math Suggests College Frenzy Will Soon Ease.
Want to help your children do better in school? Then ask them what they learned. A study shows that kids learn by telling.
