Things To Do This Weekend for Families and Kids in NYC - September 18 - 19, 2010: Live Music, Storytelling, Festivals & Crafts

If your kids like music planning this weekend will be easy for you. There are tons of live performances going on around town to choose from: an opera-musical at the Central Park Zoo, kiddie rockers performing in Tribeca, Carroll Gardens and The Bowery, a classical concert in The Bronx and an all day music-fest in Battery Park City.  This weekend also brings out those great annual celebrations the Feast of San Gennaro as well as the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival.  When tired of great music or great eats check out some free arts and crafts programs, story telling, outdoor games or a movie premiere.

Hit the new playground at Pier 6 and then join the playground associates for some fun in the grass:  hula hoops, jump ropes, lawn tick tack toe, bubbles and more.  FREE

The Storytellers Candle – Upper East Side
Making Books Sing tells the story of Pura Belpre New York City’s very first Latin librarian through storytelling, music and puppetry. Kids get to join in on the fun while learning all about the ever important library as well as a bit of Puerto Rican folklore. When it is all over kids can stick around and participate in a puppet making workshop. Presented as part of Super Sabado. FREE

Saturday Sculpture Workshops – Long Island City
What will the future look like? Creative kids will love this workshop – working with artist Heather Hart, kids get to create their own version of science fiction styled accessories - wallets from duct tape, jewelry out of who knows what or bring a t-shirt from home and completely remodel it.

Treasure It: Collage Your Summer into a Treasure Chest--Brooklyn
No matter what you and the kids did this summer you probably have some mementos lying around the house that can be put to good use in this project.  Kids work with Angela Earley, artist educator, to create collages inside and outside a keepsakes box based on the exhibition Real Nonfiction: The 3rdAnnual Artists from the Registry Exhibition.  FREE

Harmony on the Hudson –Battery Park City

A cool mini-Woodstock just for families with folksy favorites Brady Rymer and the Little Band that Could and Tom Chapin and Friends will be performing.  Jam or make an instrument from recycled materials (and parade it around the festival!) with Bash the Trash. Lindy Hop to the swinging tunes from the Harlem Renaissance Orchestra, or try the fancy footwork of the Double Dutch Divas jump roping troupe.   When you’re done, join in on the fun lawn and street games. Local restaurants will be selling their wares for lunch or you can bring your blanket and your own spread.  FREE

Fabric of Life Reception – Prospect Park
Take a trip back in time at the Historic Lefferts House and catch their brand new installment on fabric. Learn how fabric was made and used in New York City in the 1800s, what a spinning wheel does and how to make a pouch or wool felt ball. FREE

AudraRox Concert—Carroll Gardens

Every kid in the city loves the grown up rock and roll sound with the fun kiddie set lyrics of AudraRox! Catch the gang live in a benefit concert for Carroll Park and PS 29.  Food and crafts for sale too. FREE

C.A.T: The Opera-Musical – Central Park
The Family Opera Initiative creates lively and fun opera experiences specifically tailored to families.  Watch their performance of CAT, a letter loving feline, performed right in front of the snow monkeys at the Central Park Zoo.  FREE with zoo admission.

Erin Lee and the Up Past Bedtime Band: Family Pajama Party—The Bowery
Party in your pjs in the middle of the afternoon, the award winning children’s music performers will keep your little ones grooving till naptime.  $10.

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'hoole Premiere
Screening—West Midtown
Kids are dying to see this movie, let them see it a week before their friends at this US Premiere Screening and get a free copy of the book to boot. Hurry, tickets are going fast! $12

Family Concert: Themes and Variations—The Bronx
Families with children four years and older can delight in the symphonies of Mozart, Beethoven, Sekles and other classics performed by the celebrated Sinfonietta of Riverdale.  Advance ticket purchase advised. $28 for adults and $12 for children.

Princess Katie and Racer Steve Concert—Tribeca
Super fun concerts that are almost like a really good birthday party, great genre bending music that kids just love especially because they can wear a costume! And, the kids can rock while you brunch.  Perfect. $15


Out of Town:



Check out Children’s Book Day in nearby Tarrytown, New York.  Over 60 authors and illustrators will be gracing the grounds on Washington Irving’s Sunnyside for a day of literary fun on the Hudson River. $12 for adults and $6 for children over age of 5.  

In Red Bank, New Jersey October comes a little early this year. Join the German School of Monmouth as the celebrate Octoberfest with pretzel throwing, German grub, live music and more. $30 adult and $10 child.

Out on Long Island visit Sands Point Preserve for a trip back to the days of yore at the annual Sand's Point medieval festival.  Archery, Knights on horseback, a royal court, old style stuff to buy and other old timey fun.  $10 for Adults, $5 for kids.
