Weekly Wrap Up: Updated NYC School Zone Maps, Comedy for Kids, Farewell to February Break

2/23/12 - By Raven Snook

We've had a really busy February break, although it wasn't all work. Yes, we wrote new posts about comedy classes and shows for kids and how to find accurate NYC school zone maps (that second one took us a half a day to research!). But we also spent a lot of time having fun with our kids. Stephanie took her son snow tubing, Anna went on a behind-the-scenes tour of Radio City Music Hall and I sent my daughter to a half-day camp... and she demanded to stay the entire day because apparently the counselors are more fun than I am. (Maybe she was just sick of walking the dogs.)

Our sites outside of NYC have been busy, too. If you're thinking of taking a day trip this weekend, how about visiting one of the many indoor miniature golf courses in New Jersey? Meanwhile, hot on the heels of NYC's Summer Camp Guide come roundups of Long Island summer camps in Suffolk and Nassau Counties, and performing arts camps in Connecticut's Hartford County.

If you want to stay on top of everything that's going on in New Jersey, Long Island, Connecticut, Boston or Los Angeles, you can subscribe to our free newsletters. Read on for everything we covered on Mommy Poppins NYC this week.

We continued our NYC summer camps coverage with a roundup of our favorite Park Slope summer day camps.

The Sony Wonder Technology Lab has long been one of our favorite free NYC attractions, but is it good for preschoolers? A mom visits with her almost four-year-old to find out.

Is your kid the family clown? Then check out our list of family-friendly comedy shows and kids' comedy classes.

If your kid turns five this year, you probably know that next Friday, March 2 is the deadline to apply to kindergarten. However, are you sure you know your correct zone school? Due to recent school zoning changes to the Upper East Side, lower Manhattan and Brooklyn's District 20, there's been a lot of misinformation about zone schools, but we clear all of that up with our up-to-date school zoning maps.

Make the most of the rest of February break! The best bets for the weekend include kid rockers Recess Monkey in concert, an early Purim party and a Muppet movie marathon.

You can still RSVP for next week's free preschool admissions seminar, which we're co-hosting with Scribble Press on the Upper East Side. On Wednesday, February 29 at 6:30pm. Jennifer Brovost and Vimmi Shroff of PEAS (Private Education Advisory Service) will be on hand to discuss the process, the different preschool options and tips on applying. The talk is free by you must RSVP in advance.
