The hit family movie of the Fall season is sure to be MEGAMIND from Dreamworks (coming to theaters in November), but if you like taking your kids to the movies there's no reason to limit yourself to what the big movie studios are pushing. The New York International Children's Film Festival takes place every winter with two weeks full of great films for kids from all over the world. But you don't have to wait until the festival to see these films, because NYICFF is now hosting weekly screenings of children's films at the IFC Center in the Village on 6th Avenue by W4th St. Tickets are $13 for adults, $9 for kids or you can buy a 10-Pass to get 10 tickets for $80 which is a good deal if you plan on going more than once. This weekend (10/16-10/17, 2010) they are screening Secret of Moonacre a fantasy adventure film for kids ages 5 and up. Also keep an eye out for the "Best of Heebie Jeebies" on Halloween weekend with lots of strange and spooky short films (ages 10 and up).
Big Movies for Little Kids is a film series at Cobble Hill Cinemas every other Monday during the school year. The Big Movies series is fun for adults too since many of the selections picked are nostalgic or instant classics. Some highlights from this season include Wallace and Grommit: Curse of the Were Rabbit (Oct 18) and Bugs Bunny Cartoons 1940-1960 (Nov 29). This Fall they've also had free outdoor screenings at the new Toren Condo Garden Terrace in Downtown Brooklyn. You can catch the last one which is the classic Red Ballon and White Mane shorts on Friday, November 5th at 6:30pm. Regular screenings are $7 per person.
The Sony Wonder Technology Lab offers free afternoon movie screenings in Midtown. Some upcoming highlights include a double feature of Monster House and Ghostbusters on Oct 23. Screenigns are free, but you should make a reservation starting the Monday before the show.
Museum of Modern Art has two film series. The Family series generally includes interesting live action and animated short films on a theme aimed at children 4 and up followed by a discussion about the films with a museum educator. Their Tween series is featuring action adventure feature films this season, including Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker (Oct 23), The Princess Bride (Nov 13) and Raiders of the Lost Arc (Dec 4). All films are free and tickets are distributed the day of the show on a first-come, first -served basis.
Enjoy dinner and a movie at The Moxie Spot restaurant and play space which screens kid films every Friday night. At 6:15 they show a short and the feature begins at 6:45. The movies tend to be popular features from Disney, Pixar and Dreamworks. The films are fee, but many people come for dinner (regular prices apply). Kids eat free when ordering the Kids Combo. Some upcoming highlights include The Nightmare Before Christmas (10/29/10), How to Train a Dragon (11/12) and a Christmas extravaganza featuring Frosty, Rudolph, Charlie Brown and the Grinch on 12/17.
