Worth It? Family Memberships in NYC to Consider for Winter

After visiting NYC's top play spaces, museums, and other fun zones, we've rounded up the various membership deals at popular kid-centric destinations. These places keep your kids entertained, active, and out of the cold. Some even offer short-term memberships, so you only have to pay until spring arrives.

In the dead of winter, it can be daunting to schlep somewhere new every weekend, so a membership to one (or two) of your favorite kid play spots makes sense. We've already done the math so you'll know exactly how many visits it takes until these investments pay off—and whether or not the "deal" works for your family. If the math doesn't work out for you, consider buying one of the play spaces' bulk passes instead, which usually knocks a few bucks off the daily drop-in price.

New Year's Day 2019 with NYC Kids: Things to Do as a Family

One reason we live in New York City (and pay crazy rents, take packed subways, and research early education options as if we're going for a Ph.D.) is to take advantage of all the cultural experiences it offers year-round. If one of your New Year's resolutions is to do more fun things with your kids, why not kick off 2019 by taking advantage of all the great places open on New Year's Day in the Big Apple?

We came up with seven resolutions for families and then found activities to fulfill each one—all at places open on January 1, 2019, in NYC. You can find more seasonal fun, including little kid and big kid ways to celebrate New Year's Eve, in our Holiday Guide, or in our 25 Free Things to Do in NYC with Kids on Winter Break

All of us at Mommy Poppins wish you and your families a happy, healthy, and prosperous new year.

Nitehawk Cinema Opens in Park Slope, Brooklyn

This week marks the much-anticipated opening of the dine-in movie theater Nitehawk Cinema in Park Slope, in the old Pavilion Theater space near Prospect Park. It's no exaggeration to say that parents (and kids) in the neighborhood are over the moon. With the closing of the Pavilion in 2016, Brooklyn's most family-friendly neighborhood has been without a movie theater for several years, and the Nitehawk brings not just first-run and independent films but also a tasty menu to a much-loved landmark location. For a peek inside the handsomely restored space and the scoop on coming attractions, read on.

Kids Play for Free at These New York City Stores

Looking for a new winter play destination? With a shiny new FAO Schwarz filled with delights and an American Girl mega-store, there's no shortage of stores in New York City where kids can play for free. You'll find options as varied as building Lego friends, exercising on the Wii Fit, or getting their train fix for the day, and the kids will be so exhausted by day's end, they might not even whine about leaving the Nintendo system behind (fingers crossed).

New Roller Rink at Industry City Hosts Family Skate Weekends

NYC has a brand-new indoor roller skating rink, just in time to skate out those rainy winter afternoon crazies. Lola Starr, longtime host of roller skate parties for grownups at the LeFrak Center in Prospect Park, debuted a 15,000 square-foot indoor roller skating space on December 8 in Industry City, Brooklyn, which will host family skating parties every Saturday and Sunday all winter long. We recently visited for a satisfying afternoon skate, and had a chance to talk with Starr about upcoming plans for NYC's newest roller rink. For a peek inside the colorful new space, read on.
