While we love an action-packed park or playground, there's something magical about an off-the-beaten-path enclave, too, and New York City streets are packed with them. These secret gardens, hidden on busy city streets, and overflowing with lush greenery and beautiful flowers make for a different kind of escape and cool way to commune with nature. We've scoured the city blocks to find some hidden gardens and botanical wonders for you and your family to enjoy. Here are 15 secret gardens for your next outdoor adventure.

1. Grove Court – West Village

Among the winding streets of the West Village sits Grove Court, a small patch of blooming plants, with trails of ivy growing against the beautiful buildings. You can find this secret garden at the corner of Grove Street and Bedford Street.

2. Amster Yard – Turtle Bay

A New York historical landmark, this courtyard sits between Second and Third Avenues on East 49th Street. Take a seat at one of the iron cafe tables while you enjoy the relaxing greenery.

3. The Ford Foundation Atrium – Tudor City

Located on 43rd Street between First and Second Avenues, this winter garden is hidden in the middle of a tall, glass skyscraper. Explore the garden filled with 39 species of plants and a reflecting pool on weekdays from 8am-6pm and Saturdays from 11am-6pm.

4. Alice's Garden – Chelsea

A sweet brick path takes you through this floral walkway, created by Alice Parsekian, who lived in the area for more than 50 years. While Alice has since passed away, neighbors can still take a moment to enjoy her beautiful secret garden.

5. Greenacre Park – Midtown East

This hidden gem, located on 51st Street between Second and Third Avenues, features a mini cascading waterfall surrounded by beautiful flowers.

6. 6BC Botanical Garden – East Village

This neighborhood garden, bursting with greenery, is a lovely oasis in the middle of Alphabet City.

7. The Church of St. Luke in the Fields – West Village

Step into the church's secret garden to enjoy more than 100 species of birds who frequent this oasis, which is filled with numerous flowers, plants, and also a frequent stop for migrating butterflies.

8. 6 & B Garden – East Village

This community garden houses a lovely koi pond. Surrounding it, you'll find a variety of plants and flowers.

9. Tudor City Greens – Tudor City

You have to climb a staircase to find this hidden gem, which sits above East 42nd Street. The park, which is two blocks long, provides a lovely respite from the hustle and bustle below. You can visit any day from 7am-10pm.

10. Bruce's Garden – Inwood

A part of Isham Park since the 1970s, this secret garden is filled with greenery and ornamental flowers, as well as a pair of beehives. The garden's namesake is a long-time volunteer Bruce Reynolds, who died on September 11th while on duty as a Port Authority Police Officer.

Windmill Community Garden is a secret oasis

11. Windmill Community Garden – Long Island City, Queens

A group of Long Island City residents turned this formerly vacant lot into a beautiful secret garden, complete with seating so everyone can enjoy the lovely view.

12. Smiling Hogshead Ranch – Long Island City, Queens

This unused portion of LIRR real estate was transformed into a community garden by a team of local volunteers. The MTA worked with the crew to turn the old railways into the green space it is today.

13. New York Chinese Scholar's Garden – Richmond Terrace, Staten Island

Part of the Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden, this garden is based on gardens from the Ming Dynasty. The oasis is one of two authentic outdoor Chinese gardens in the country. Relax while walking through the bamboo forest while you take in the waterfalls and the koi pond.

14. West Side Community Garden – Upper West Side

Located between two apartment buildings, this lush garden is run by a group of dedicated volunteers who maintain the garden throughout the year. It hosts events regularly as well, all of which are open to the public.

15. St. Vartan Park Garden – Murray Hill

While not a hidden garden, per se, this section of St. Vartan Park has long been closed to the public, but the gates recently swung open to allow visitors to explore the patch of green space on the east end of the park. A long-time private partnership with a nearby preschool meant the area was inaccessible, but for now, at least, that's no longer the case.
