Weekend Fun for Philly Kids: Circus, Performances, Nature Feb 20-21

Busy work schedules, weekend birthday parties, sports games, music lessons, and art classes can make it challenging for Philly parents to plan family outings. But, it is these family adventures which create lasting childhood memories. Thankfully, Mommy Poppins Philly has done the research for you and has found lots of great options to help your family make moments to treasure.

This weekend, see The Greatest Show on Earth at the Wells Fargo Center. Check out a performance such as the Academy of Music's Beauty and the Beast or the Media Theatre's Peter Pan and Wendy: A New Musical. Take in a kids' concert at World Cafe Live or Sellersville Theater. If you have an outdoorsy clan, visit Morris Arborteum, Bucktoe Creek Preserve, Green Lane Park, or Rolling Hill Park for their wintertime nature excursions. Cap off the weekend with some tasty chocolate treats at Kennett Chocolate Lovers Festival

Please look below for more recommendations for weekend fun. Don't forget to look through our entire calendar to view all of the possibilities. Have fun making unforgettable memories with your crew this weekend!

Seven Dinosaur Destinations Near NYC for Kids

My 10-year-old son has been dino crazy for years and I do my best to indulge him. Our latest dino-adventure was counting down the seconds until we saw Jurassic World on opening night last summer. I loved the original Michael Crichton novel and saw the first blockbuster movie on opening night back in the 1990s, so I couldn't wait to experience the thrilling, prehistoric action on the big screen with my son.

The live action of a PG-13 dino movie is too much for most kids, so we've rounded up the top dinosaur attractions in NYC (hello American Museum of Natural History!), or within a three-hour drive of the city, like the tot-friendly Dinosaur Place in Connecticut. If you've got an aspiring paleontologist in your life, you'll want to put these six dinosaur destinations on your must-see list.

Poconos Family Getaway: Split Rock Resort and Jack Frost Mtn

If you can’t escape the snow this winter, you might as well enjoy it—and there’s no better way than skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing in the Poconos.

At Split Rock Resort in Lake Harmony, Pennsylvania, deep in the heart of the Pocono Mountains, the emphasis is squarely on family. Amenities such as an arcade, movie theater, indoor heated pool and indoor water park up the fun factor exponentially.

And all less than two hours from New York City? We had to get the scoop on this family getaway. Here’s our parent (and kids) review, and things to know before you go.

Weekday Picks for Philly Kids: Museums, Stories, Indoor Fun Feb 15-19

The chill of February can keep Philly families indoors. But it doesn't have to keep kids at home! Put on your coats, gloves, and hats to venture off to some wonderful and educational opportunities this week.

Listen to stories at Smith Playhouse, Neshaminy Mall's Barnes & Noble, or Bucks County Children's Museum. Learn about the anatomy of the heart at the Franklin Institute. If you have a budding artist, consider stopping by Exton Mall for its Mommy and Me session presented by Chester County Arts Association or Springfield Mall's Kids Crew featuring Community Arts Center of Wallingford.

Introducing the New Mommy Poppins Web and Mobile Site

If you’ve visited Mommy Poppins in the last month, you’ve probably noticed that we have a brand-new website. We hope you like it! Our new site is designed to offer a better mobile experience, as well as a less cluttered design and easier navigation. Since the launch, we’ve been getting great feedback from readers and have been fixing some initial bugs and making more improvements. We wanted to take a moment to show you around the site and highlight some of the new features.

One-Hour Family Vacation: National Parks Adventure in IMAX 3D

There is nothing quite like a milestone birthday. In 2016 The National Parks service turns 100. Thanks to the prescient collaboration of President Theodore Roosevelt and naturalist John Muir, 400 plus sites have been preserved for generations to enjoy as national parks. In honor of these natural landmarks’ first century, McGillivray Freeman Films and IMAX 3D have produced a spectacular movie, America Wild: National Parks Adventure. It's an IMAX film to watch as a family and then plan your next vacation.

Tarantulas! Alive and Up Close at The Academy of Natural Sciences

I've never been that into creepy crawlies. And I am quite terrified of most insects and spiders. But as a mother I happily take on the challenge of facing my fears, in an effort to expose my little one to new and exciting experiences. The Tarantulas: Alive and Up Close exhibit, which just opened at the Academy of Natural Sciences, is one of these experiences. And, as often happens, it turned out to be way more awesome than I expected!

Weekday Picks for Philly Kids: Valentines, Stories, Stars Feb 8-12

Love is in the air, as many Philly families can tell from the variety of Valentine fun that appears in our Events Calendar this week. Take a trip to Bucks County Children's Museum to make a Valentine craft. Listen to the story, Carmine: A Little More Red at Brandywine River Museum's Read Aloud workshop. Or, enjoy a Valentine Tea Party at Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy. For older kids, check out Franklin Institute's Night Skies in the Observatory.

Weekend Fun for Philly Kids: WinterFest, History, Chinese New Year Feb 6-7

If winter happens to be your favorite time of year, it is your lucky weekend! There are plenty of family-fun events happening that celebrate this chilly, snowy time of year. Wagner Free Institute of Science's Winter Wonderland and Briar Bush Nature Center's WinterFest both offer seasonal crafts, games, and activities for families. Nature-loving visitors to Riverbend Environmental Education Center can explore the outdoors during cold winter months at its Winter Trek. Or, incorporate a history lesson into the mix at Valley Forge National Historic Park's Join the Continental Army experience.

On the other hand, consider sharing a cultural experience with your kids this weekend. Many museums throughout the Philadelphia area are celebrating Chinese New Year. Consider visiting Garden State Discovery Museum, Independence Seaport Museum, or Philadelphia Museum of Art for a variety of festivities welcoming the Year of the Monkey.

After spending time enjoying winter activities or museums, check out our Events Calendar as the spring consignment sales are starting to pop up.  New information is constantly being updated to our entire list so be sure to check back often. Have a great weekend!

Weekday Picks for Philly Kids: Groundhog Day, Library Events Feb 1-5

During the cold month of February, it can be challenging to keep toddlers, preschoolers, and big kids busy. They never seem to get tired and are always looking for something to do, even after a long day at school. Channel that energy into some of the exciting activities that appear in our Events Calendar this week.

Check out a library program such as Eastwick Library's George Crum Potato Chip Tasting event, Haddington Library's African Mask-Making Workshop, or Haverford Library's Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader session. Celebrate Groundhog Day at Elmwood Park Zoo or Norristown Farm Park. Afterwards, get crafty with help from our WeeWork Projects for Kids.
