Weekday Event Picks for LA Kids: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Batmobile, & Peacocks January 19 – 23
This week starts with a national holiday honoring our nation’s most important civil rights leader, Martin Luther King, Jr. Schools are closed; the kids are home, but that’s okay because there are lots of things to do. The National Parks are open for free on Monday, and who doesn’t love a Parade?
The Kingdom Day Parade in South Los Angeles actually has more floats (though probably fewer flowers) than that other parade in Pasadena. Why not take a moment and get the kids to tell you what they know about this great American? Trust me, it’s been covered in school. Enjoy the three day weekend, and if you don’t see something in the picks that suits your fancy, check out our event calendar. There are many more possibilities…
OUR LATEST VIDEOS
1. Kingdom Day Parade – Monday
Kingdom Day is a huge event that begins on Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. at Western and continues to Crenshaw Blvd. If crowds aren’t your thing, avoid this one. Otherwise, it is a terrific way to honor and remember.
2. Free Day at the Arboretum – Tuesday
Promenade with the Peacocks. On the third Tuesday of every month, this admission is free at this botanical garden in Arcadia.
3. Screening of Batman – Wednesday
I’m not entirely sure what the connection is here, apart from the visiting vehicle from the Petersen Museum, but The Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley is screening Batman in conjunction with its exhibit on automobiles. Tickets are $15 in advance and include a tour of the Batmobile. This is a cool library where the kids can check out Air Force One and a large chunk of the Berlin Wall.
4. Coding for Kids – Thursday
Kids can learn to code for free at this workshop for 4-6 graders at the Central branch of the Los Angeles Public Library. Projects are to be featured at a coding event in April.
5. Strange Magic – Friday
There is nothing quite as festive as a trip to El Capitan Theater in Hollywood. Take the kids to this historic movie palace and check out the latest from Star Wars’ creator George Lucas. Strange Magic is his modern, animated riff on Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
