5/12/15 - By Jody Mercier

With the temperature (and humidity!) rising, summer seems to have arrived, but most NYC kids still have weeks of classes ahead. Nevertheless, we've got news of lots of cool happenings to look forward to once homework no longer dominates every waking minute. From rewards for good grades at a popular amusement park, to a partnership between the Girl Scouts and the National Park Service, to an innovative new program at the Children's Museum of the Arts, this news post is packed with fun for families.

Making the grade pays. Coney Island amusement park, Luna Park, is giving kids with good grades free rides! During the month of June, students in kindergarten through college can present their most recent report cards at guest services and receive up to 20 ride credits. Every A gets you four credits; each B, three and two per C. Take note: a few of Luna Park's most popular attractions (the Cyclone, Thunderbolt and B&B Carousel) still require cold, hard cash.

Scouting in national parks. The National Park Service and Girl Scouts Ranger Program, which aims to get girls outdoors and enjoying all our national parks have to offer, has gotten an upgrade. Not only can scouts participate in educational activities or service projects, either individually or as a troop, they can also design their own. Plus they can earn badges from the Girl Scouts and certificates from the National Park Service for completed projects.

Making art accessible. The Children's Museum of the Arts is one of our favorite places to play, and it's launching a new program to make its offerings more accessible to children of various learning styles. The two-year Art for All initiative, honoring the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, debuts July 1. Children with special needs and their parents or caregivers are invited to visit the museum FREE of charge. In exchange, those families will share feedback about their experiences that will help guide professional development for teaching artists and staff to build a more inclusive environment. Families will need to register for the free admission program on the museum's website beginning July 1.

Paid family leave for all. The New York State Assembly passed legislation providing paid family leave for working New Yorkers earlier this year, and it has since been introduced to the Senate. The Paid Family Leave Insurance Act would provide up to 12 weeks of job-protected paid leave, giving working New Yorkers the opportunity to care for their newborns or see to the needs of sick spouses or relatives. You can lend your support to this issue by sending a letter to Governor Cuomo.
