Mostly Free & Fun Things to Do With NJ Kids This Weekend Feb 21-22: Superhero Filmmaking, Tea Party, Nature Discovery Days & More!
At this point in the winter, we’re trudging along, dreaming of mild spring days and even a flower or two (heck, most of us would settle for not having to shovel snow). Luckily, New Jersey is full of family fun this weekend, with activities to help you beat the end of winter blues. Get a dose of culture and celebrate the Chinese New Year at Garden State Discovery Museum, take your little Superman to check out the awesome Superhero Filmmaking program at Montclair Art Museum or sit down to a dainty meal during Matilda’s Tea Party at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum. For some outdoor winter fun, check out the Nature Kids Discovery Day at Schiff Natural Lands or learn about maple sugaring at Tenafly Nature Center. Chinese New Year (Cherry Hill, NJ)
Children of all ages are invited to the Garden State Discovery Museum's Chinese New Year celebration. Welcome the Year of the Goat with traditional sights and sounds and then explore some of the great mainstay exhibits that the museum offers, like the Dinosaurium and Bubble Trouble.

Matilda’s Tea Party (Morris Township, NJ)
Children are invited to Frelinghuysen Arboretum for this 12th annual tea party in honor of Matilda Frelinghuysen. Learn about the history of chocolate, enjoy some special snacks and make a chocolate treat to take home.
Camp Riverbend Open House (Warren, NJ)
One of our favorite camps in our fair state, parents and children ages 3-14 can try their hands at lots of fun Riverbend activities, including games, crafts, cooking and more. A fun morning to remind us of warmer days ahead!
Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse (Newark, NJ)
This charming adaptation of the award-winning children's book tells the tale of Lilly the mouse. She loves everything about school, especially her teacher, but when he takes away her prized purse, Lilly gets upset.
Nature Kids Discovery Day (Mendham, NJ)
Join a Schiff Lands naturalist in discovering the wonders of nature with a different theme each month – February is all about ‘Winter in the Woods.’ Each morning session includes theme exploration, fun activities and a hike on the trail.
Meet the Critters (Chatham, NJ)
Head to Great Swamp to learn about the live animals that reside at the Education Center, including turtles and snakes. This special nature program takes place indoors but if you’ve got cabin fever, bundle up after the program and hike one of the beautiful winter trails.

Superhero Filmmaking (Montclair, NJ)
Spend the day at Montclair Art Museum as a superhero while learning how to create Hollywood style visual effects. Students will perform exciting action scenes in front of a green screen and composite superhero motion graphics with Adobe Suite editing software. All students will take home a digital copy of their movie in stunning high-definition on a flash drive.
Family Sing-a-long (Berkeley Heights, NJ)
Duck out of the cold for some musical fun with the kiddos. Diva Moms NJ presents the return of ‘Jersey Jason’ from Jungle Gym Jam and ‘Miss Nina’ for a family concert at Pete's Place.
Maple Sugaring (Tenafly, NJ)
‘Tis the season for maple sugaring! Head to TNC and learn how to identify a maple tree, and discover the history of syrup. Your group will check Tenafly Nature Center's tapped tree and boil down sap to make fresh, warm maple syrup - a sweet treat for all to taste.
