Top CT Community Youth Orchestra Programs

3/6/17 - By Elizabeth Howard

If your kids -- like mine -- love playing their musical instrument, there is no better place to encourage their blossoming musical skills than to have them audition for a place in their community youth music ensemble.

Fortunately for us, Connecticut is rife with well-organized youth symphonies and orchestral groups. Most cater to ages 10 and up; all are audition-based, highly skilled at developing musical skills and encourage a welcoming atmosphere. In addition to the list of Connecticut's community youth orchestras below, you might also be interested in summer music camp! When considering a community youth orchestra, it's good to keep in mind:

  • Most run along the regional/area school calendar with summers off.
  • Kids will be expected to practice regularly between rehearsals.
  • Organizations are volunteer-run. Be prepared to lend a hand and assist with fundraising.
  • Rehearsals can be up to two hours long and may take place on the weekend.
  • Several groups have travel opportunities across the world!
  • Scholarships and sibling discounts may be available, if you ask.
