Even though my daughter is barely in grade school, we've already shared several spa experiences—not only is it a nice bonding activity for us, but who doesn't enjoy a good mani/pedi? While my son has never joined us on these outings, that changed when I took both kids to the recently opened Milk & Cookies Kids Spa and Salon on the Upper East Side.
Billed as a place where "fun, beauty and delicious meet," the salon is true to its name, offering milk and cookies with every spa treatment. Although our outing was a kids-only affair, Milk & Cookies has services (and cookies) for visitors of all ages, including those of us who are still kids at heart.
During our recent visit, my 9-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter were treated to spa pedicures. Though my son was reluctant at first, the staff won him over with their "Cool Dude" offerings on the spa menu. He chose to be pampered with a Slimy Booger Invasion pedicure: a gooey foot soak, complete with floating plastic bugs. While not exactly what I'd go for in a pedicure, my little man had fun! All "Cool Dude" treatments leave out the traditional nail polish in favor of a temporary tattoo, though it includes a nice soak, nail trim, scrub, buff and massage. By treatment's end, he exclaimed that he'd be back and would recommend the spot to his friends.
As one of the "Cool Gals," my daughter opted for the Vanilla Sprinkle Treatment during her pedicure, which included a soak, scrub, polish and two designs. Unisex options include flavors like "S'mookie" (s'mores and cookie), Cookies & Cream, Mint Chocolate Chip and Gummy Worm Mud Pie. There are also simpler (and less expensive) pedi options that include a basic milk soak in chocolate, strawberry, vanilla or banana flavors. All of these flavor combinations also apply to the spa's manicure treatments. If you're looking for more of a mommy-and-me experience, Milk & Cookies offers several packages that get parents and kids in on the action together.
The salon also offers a range of hair services beginning with baby's first cut (complete with a certificate and keepsake lock). While a stylist tackles their hair, children are entertained by a tablet preloaded with lots of kid-friendly entertainment. There's also a private party room on site, and birthday parties can be tailored to boys, girls or a mixed crowd.
Once they've been properly pampered, kids can hit the cookie bar for their choice of cookie and a cup of milk—regular, strawberry or chocolate—to complete their special outing.
If one kid finishes before another, like my son did, there's a great lounge area with a Wii and Netflix. I was afraid my kids would never leave once they'd settled into the plush beanbag chairs on the floor. They were truly relaxed, comfortable and full!
Before we left the salon, both kids took time to scrawl their appreciation across the spa's whiteboard, and on our way home they were already asking when we could return.
Milk & Cookies Kids Spa and Salon is located at 1196 First Avenue between 64th and 65th Streets. Its open Tuesday and Thursday 10am-6pm, Friday 10am-7pm, Saturday 9am-7pm and Sunday 11am-5pm. Find the complete list of services and prices on the website.
