Family Friendly Shows at the St. George Theater

This historic theater, once the most lively and gorgeous on Staten Island, was renovated and reopened within the last few years, and is bringing the theatrical heyday back to the island.

The vaudeville house first opened in 1929, with a Wurlizter organ, one of the largest cantilevered balconies ever built, velvet seats, gilded balconies and grand staircases. Today, the theater emits that same old movie house feeling and really has the power to take you back to Olde New York.

Big name acts like Tony Bennett and Art Garfunkel have graced the stage at St. George, but so has Nickelodeon’s Blues Clues. The Spanish-Italian Baroque style theater is a very family-friendly venue complete with behind the stage tours, local events like student dance recitals, classic and unique shows and an atmosphere you’ll have difficulty finding anywhere else.

The hour-long tours give a crash course in theater, from architectural design and history to what goes into putting on a show, careers in the arts and theater etiquette. Call up before heading to the theater to schedule a tour.

Some of this years shows are The Wizard of Oz, The Rainbow Fish, The Ugly Duckling, Charlotte’s Web and the B-52’s. Tickets for plays range from around $10-$25, and tickets for concerts range from around $25-$100.
