Planting the Seeds of Success

Learn how to grow your own veggies or flowers from seed, organically, in a pot that you can put anywhere inside or outside your home. The session will cover what to grow, how to grow, what to grow it in, composting, ingredients of potting soil, what organic means, how to control diseases and insects organically, how to set up a vegetable garden, and more. They can also discuss how to select plant varieties that will do well for you based on your site conditions, and help give you specific recommendations of some tried-and-true favorites. The class fee includes one 12" pot filled with potting soil, one plug tray and a packet of seeds of your choice, as well as class fee for each participant (kids accompanying an adult are no extra charge).

Join CMEE, along with Farmer Frank from Bhumi Farms and Gardener Zoe from Country Lane Gardens, as the museum prepares their garden for the growing season. Kids (and parents) attending this afternoon event will learn about garden preparation, how to transfer a plant, and what you need to do to make sure it remains healthy and strong. Families will also be given their own flower to care for at home.

The 2016 program provides a hands-on gardening experience for children. Making newspaper pots, potting seeds, identifying weeds, composting, planting, harvesting and more. Children ages 5 and up are best suited for the program, which is not parent participatory. They will be divided into two groups – ages 5 to 8 years and 9 to 12 years. The eight-week gardening session will meet on Wednesday mornings July 6 through August 24 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

The Children's Museum of the East End has partnered with Bridge Gardens and the Peconic Land Trust this summer for “In the Garden." During this farm-to-table program, children will be introduced to the plant life cycle and other basic elements of sustainable gardening. Each week, families will meet at Bridge Gardens in Bridgehampton where they will enjoy songs, stories and work on projects related to gardening. Tuesday mornings July 5 through August 23.
