Super League's Minecraft League: STEM Learning in a Movie Theater

10/2/15 - By Jody Mercier

Leagues of kids playing Minecraft in movie theaters all over the country? We're thrilled to share our cool new sponsor's unique program! Inspiring kids in STEM subjects is a topic on lots of parental minds (you may even have a tab open to the free coding apps you've been meaning to download), but much of this learning seems to be a solo affair. Super League Gaming takes Minecraft enrichment to a whole new level, bringing kids together to play the mega-popular computer game on big screens at movie theaters nationwide.

Super League events are social experiences; kids form teams of four to seven players and arrive with their laptops in tow to spend an hour and a half each week working together in a recreational video game league. Gamers can create their own teams with friends, or register as individuals and be joined with another team or group. Kids of all ages are welcome, but most participants are between 6 and 18 years old.

Super League's fall session gets underway on October 6, 2015 and runs for six weeks. Sessions are held at movie theaters nationwide, including New York and Los Angeles. Parents can select a nearby location and register on the Super League website. Sessions take place on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoons, depending on locale, and run from 4:30pm to 6pm. The cost of the program is $100, which grants a gamer access to each of the six group-play events, as well as a Super League gaming jersey distributed during the first session.

Each gamer must have his or her own laptop—tablets and cell phones are not currently supported—as well as Minecraft version 1.8 or higher installed. Organizers encourage gamers to arrive with a fully-charged battery, as access to outlets is limited.

Super League Gaming runs in three phases. During the first phase, teams work together to show off their creativity and build a project on their team plot (weekly themes such as space, dinosaurs and pirates provide inspiration). At the end of the game, screenshots are posted online, where gamers vote for their favorite design.

The second phase of the game, known as Mayhem, involves an all-out battle in which teams try to stay alive in the face of storms, monsters and other challenges. In this mode, the movie screen displays a birds-eye view of the game and offers clues to help teams survive and rack up more points. The final game mode is Crystal Crater, an all-new Super League survival mode that forces gamers to collect crystals to keep their capsules powered up.

Super League's social element doesn't end with the big-screen session. Gamers can also log onto their Super League accounts from home to view what their team and others nationwide have created and vote on their favorites. Winning teams earn prizes and possibly even college scholarships.
