Weekend Events for Kids on Long Island, December 20-21: Marionette Shows, Holiday Tours and Science Sunday
Wow! How did December 18th go and creep up on us so fast? Here we are, the last weekend before Christmas, and only two full weekends left in 2009! Take advantage of them by getting out and enjoying some of the great Seasonal events happening on Long Island this weekend:
OUR LATEST VIDEOS
Candlelight Evenings at Old Bethpage Village Restoration
Saturday, December 19-Sunday December 20, 5pm-9:30pm
Old Bethpage Village Restoration
1303 Round Swamp Rd, Old Bethpage
I feel like I am always suggesting you check out Old Bethpage Village Restoration. But, really, it's because it is one of the most unique places for you to share traditional and historical restorations. It's like having our own Williamsburg right here on Long Island. This time of year, the Village is actually closed on the days the Candlelight Evenings occur and with good reason-the village comes alive at night. Check out the Village buildings lit by candles in their windows (explaining the tradition so many homes share today), warm up by the bon fire in the middle of the Village with a cup of warm cider or ginger cookies from the Local Inn, and enjoy live music as you stroll through the HIstoric Village and back into the 19th century. Go to their website by clicking here.
Caroling Around the Campfire
Sunday, December 20 1pm-2pm
Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center
134 Cove Rd, Oyster Bay
It is supposed to snow on Sunday, and if you can make the trek up to Oyster Bay, you should for this fun and seasonal event. The T. Roosevelt Audubon Center is a wonderful place to visit. Besides being one of the most naturally beautiful spots along the North Shore to experience the outdoors, the staff is terrific. Join them on Sunday for hot cider and Holiday carols. Then grab your little one and stroll hand in hand through the sanctuary. The Center doesn't advertise these events well on line, which makes it one of the best kept secrets, but also hard to learn about. So, for more information, give them a call at: 516-922-3200
Crystals and Snowflakes on Science Sunday
Sunday, December 20th, 11am-4pm
Long Island Science Center
11 West Main St, Riverhead
The Long Island Science Center opens on Sundays with educational themes for families to explore. This week it is seasonably appropriate. Check out crystal collections under a microscope and learn about where snow comes from and how it is formed up there. In case you are looking for a way to enjoy the arctic air or snow while staying warm inside, this is perfect! Click here for more information.
Marionette Show at Old Westbury Gardens
Sunday, December 20th, 3pm
Old Westbury Gardens
71 Old Westbury Rd, Old Westbury
Another great Historical spot to visit is Old Westbury Gardens. Circa 1906, the old mansion is a throwback to the Gatsby era. Decorated beautifully for the Holidays, you can take a tour of the home and the gardens (it would be really cool if it snows this weekend). But even more incentive to visit, this weekend is the marionette show featuring traditional 10 inch tall hand crafter puppets. Internationally known and seasoned, famous puppeteer Vit Horejs will present the show. For details, click here.
Finally, if you still are looking for a great Nutcracker performance, we recently posted about some. And, if you have yet to visit the famous Mr. Clause, you might want to check out our list of some great spots as well. For those of you who need a tree still, never fear, we covered that as well. Check out our post about Local Christmas Tree Farms for some ideas. Have a great weekend!
