Nine Great Shows for Kids in New York City: Culture Guide Fall 2010

Fall is more than just back to school and Halloween; it is the start of a brand new theater season in New York City--and not just for the adults. Thanks to a host of actors, musicians, puppeteers and storytellers kids have lots of great theater in this town. Most live shows for kids are about one hour in length, designed just for them and much more affordable than the Great White Way. Live family theater is a perfect way to engage their young minds--and we are blessed with a lot of it. We happily took on the task of wading through the many, many shows being produced this fall to bring you what we think you and your gang will really enjoy. Read on for our highlights of the fall 2010 Children’s Theater Season.
OUR LATEST VIDEOS
Perfect for Your Preschooler:
The Enchantment Theater Company uses life size puppets and masks to tell the magical story of Harold and the Purple Crayon. Watch the creative toddler as he draws himself joining the circus, flying a spaceship and meeting a princess. Plan to be whisked away to Harold’s imaginary, purple crayoned world recreated through large scale video animation. For children 4 years old and up. Presented as part of the Tribeca Performing Arts Center Family Series.
Get into the Christmas Spirit:
The intimate Manhattan Children’s Theater is debuting a soon to be holiday classic: Lula Belle in Search of Santa. Our heroine goes on a wild romp to the far reaches of the galaxy to find a missing Santa Claus in this all ages comedy.
A perfect First Opera:
Puss in Boots/El Gato con Botas is a lush, visual opera created for young audiences by The Gotham Chamber Opera and the Tectonic Theater Company. It features a live singing operatic narrative, fantastic looking bunraku puppets and the choice of going to either the original Spanish or an English performance. For ages 8 and up at The New Victory Theater.
A Gentle First Theater Experience:
The Egg and Spoon, by the British, Lyngo Theater Company is part multi sensory, highly interactive theater performance and part circle time. The audience sits on the floor surrounding the two actors as nature comes to life around them in this sweet new play. At the New Victory Theater for children aged 3 to 5 years.
For Sweeny Todd Fans:
Nevermore is dark and melancholy yet fantastical and surreal (and a little Tim Burton-esque.) This gothic musical portrays the life and times of Edgar Allen Poe. By the Catalyst Theater Company at the New Victory Theater for ages 11 years and older.
Perfect for Little Girls:
Based on the beloved book series and animated children’s program, Angelina Mouseling and the gang at Camembert Academy will be dancing their way into little girl’s hearts when they take to the stage in Angelina Ballerina: The Musical. For all ages by The Vital Theater Company.
A Little Treat for Halloween:
The Lumpy Bumpy Pumpkin is an original piece by The Shadowbox Theater where a less than perfect pumpkin learns he has a lot to offer: storytelling, guitar music accompaniment and charming, simple puppetry tell the story. For ages 'early childhood to second grade' at The Theatres at 45 Bleecker Street.
All shows from the Shadowbox Theater are currently on hold. Please check their website for more information and updates.
For Fans of Big Song and Dance Numbers:
Based on the popular series of books about the adorable red headed and freckled 7 year old, Strawberry, the brand new, Freckleface Strawberry: The Musical is a pure delight! Bright and colorful sets and costumes with catchy musical scenes that show kids that even though we are all different – we are all very special. This fun musical is sure to be a hit with both girls and boys. For all ages at The New World Stages.
For the Globe Trekker:
The World Dance Theater tells the well known story of Little Red Riding Hood through the dance, music and costumes of Ireland, Canada, Argentina and the USA in Little Red: A Fairy Tale in Rhythm and Rhyme. Not to be missed. Appropriate for all ages at the Queens Theater in the Park.
