Check out the 26 foot high READ sculpture made of 25,000 Dr. Seuss books displayed on the steps of the main branch of the New York Public Library, that kicks off the movement Reading Across America and honors Dr. Seuss’ each year on his big day.  The sculpture, erected by Target, will be on display Thursday February 25 and Friday February 26, 2011 before it is dismantled and all the books are donated to public schools across the city. Head out to your local Target store Saturday February 25, 2011 between 9 and 11 am for story time readings of The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham and other Seuss favorites in special Seuss-inspired reading nooks, give aways and goodie bags complete the fun. FREE

The docs best stories will be read at 11 am on Sunday, February 27, 2011 and continue for an entire hour in the Fort Greene Park Visitors Center while kids make their own Seuss inspired characters to take home.  FREE

Celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday by hearing his books read aloud, playing pin the hat on the cat and making your own hat craft to take with you at the Ottendorfer Library, Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at 4 p.m. FREE

March 1, 2011 is Dr. Seuss Day at the Pomonok branch of the Queens Library and kids can view a Dr. Seuss inspired movie, sit in on story time and make a take home craft. The fun starts at 3 pm.  FREE

How better to celebrate the beloved author and illustrator than by making your very own book in his honor? Scribble Press is throwing a birthday bash from 3:30 to 6 pm on Wednesday March 2, 2011 at their Upper East Side location.  Expect Seuss inspired games like cat in the hat, pin the green egg on the plate and of course story time.  Plus, parents can get in on the action, too, by making their own book for FREE when their child makes one.  FREE (Fee to make book)

At the Todt Hill-Westerleigh branch of NYPL, kids 5 and over can hear their favorite Dr. Seuss book read aloud and play some fun games on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at 4 p.m.

At the Brooklyn Children’s Museum toddlers can join in on Seuss story time, make a fantastic party hat to take home and even have a slice of birthday cake, Friday, March 4 – Sunday, March 6, 2011 at 11:30 am. Free with paid museum admission. For 18 month to 2 ½ year old children.  

Kids aged 6 years and older can join in on a special workshop at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum on Saturday March 5, 2011 at 2:30 pm that focuses on the wacky words of Seuss by working on Seuss inspired poems and a party hat craft. A slice of birthday cake rounds out the fun.  Free with paid museum admission.

A cool puppet show, games and stories are in all in store for visitors to the Kew Garden Hills branch of the Queens Library’s Seuss-a-Thon on Monday March 7, 2011 at 4:30. FREE

At the Saratoga Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, hear master story teller LuAnn Adams tell favorite Dr. Seuss stories her own unique way using props, puppets and participation from the audience.  Expect to hear: Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, Horton Hatches An Egg and Yertle the Turtle. Make green eggs and ham for breakfast, a little minced cilantro, pureed spinach or plain old food coloring mixed in with the eggs will do the trick.

Hunker down for a Dr. Seuss marathon and try to see how many times your tongue gets tied while reading Fox in Sox!

Visit Seussville, the online home for all things Suess where you can find lots of activities to share with toddlers and computer games for the school aged kids.

Work with your kids on creating their own Dr. Seuss prose.  It sure isn’t easy but it can be a lot of fun!
