Kid Activities In The Hamptons And North Fork This Weekend: July 13-14

It is the middle of July and the delicious Long Island corn is as high as an elephant's eye. Head out to the North Fork this weekend to experience delicious flavors and fun at the Harbes Farm Sweet Corn Festival. For families who are more into monster trucks and hot rods than farm animals, check out the 21st Annual Long Island Antique Power Association Summer Show. Have kids who need one last dose of fireworks? Ride the ferry over to Shelter Island for the Fireworks Display at Crescent Beach. Looking for a slightly more intellectual outing? Kids 2-12 years of age try their hand at the Brain Quest Challenge at the Westhampton Free Library. Read on for more of our best event picks for this weekend.

Mattituck Annual Street Fair - Mattituck
The annual Mattituck Street Fair features live music, food, entertainment, and local artisans displaying arts and crafts. This event takes place rain or shine.

Brain Quest Challenge - Westhampton Beach
For the second year, Brain Quest teams up with Books & Books at Westhampton Free Library for a fast-paced question and answer game. Kids 2-12 years of age use their smarts to answer questions individually, or as a team, and everyone receives prizes and participation certificates. Registration is required for this free event.

Rock Collecting: Beach Treasure Hunt - Bridgehampton
Take a little beach comber (kids 3 to 5 years of age) to South Fork Natural History Museum & Nature Center for a workshop about the colorful and sparkly rocks that litter our local beaches. Workshop leader and nature educator Tyler Armstrong leads children on a treasure hunt on the beach, where he teaches them how rocks are made and how they change over time. Collection bags and magnifying glasses are provided.

Jamesport Fire Department Carnival - Jamesport
A parade with all of the local fire departments is the highlight of this carnival, which features rides, games, and food.

The Pitchforks With Special Guest The Hamptones - Westhampton
Have a Pitch Perfect or Glee fan at home? Then score a ticket to see the Pitchforks and the Hamptones perform at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center. The Pitchforks, founded in 1979, are the oldest all-male a cappella group at Duke University. Opening for the Pitchforks are The Hamptones, a group of local teens who are part of the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center's youth program. Their coaches boast impressive credits, including vocal arrangements for the films Pitch Perfect and The Sing Off, as well as vocal coaching on the television show The Voice.

Book Reading With Children's Author George Held - Bridgehampton
George Held is a South Fork Natural History Museum & Nature Center board member and prize-winning poet. Celebrate the launch of his new children's book, Neighbors The Yard Critters Too, along with a reading of nature poems. Parents and children in the audience are encouraged to read a poem or mimic animal movements and sounds. A book signing follows the reading, along with refreshments and print tattoos.  

Fireworks Display - Shelter Island
Fireworks begin at dusk and parking fills up quickly, so arrive early and enjoy the show.

Family Fun With Magic Al - Riverhead
The Suffolk Theater in Riverhead welcomes Magic Al and his famous combination of magic and comedy. It is a fun-filled performance for kids of all ages.

Walk On Water: Introduction To Stand Up Paddleboarding - Bridgehampton
South Fork Natural History Museum & Nature Center offers a unique opportunity for kids 10 years of age and up. Try stand up paddleboarding with instructor and naturalist Juliana Duryea. Juliana teaches the basics of paddleboarding in Accabonac Harbor while focusing on environmental ethos, water safety, and observing wildlife while enjoying the outdoors.

Sweet Corn Festival - Mattituck and Jamesport
Visit Harbes Farm to celebrate summer and taste Long Island's sweetest corn. Discover the many uses of corn and taste a variety of corn-based foods, such as corn bread, fritters, and salsa. This annual event has a literary bent, featuring award winning and bestselling local author's of children's, young adult, and family-oriented books. Enjoy readings and book signings, live music, wine tastings, duck slide demonstrations, games, and barnyard activities.
