10 Things to do During Baby’s First Summer on Long Island
There’s plenty to do with the kids during the summer on Long Island--and even the island's littlest residents can get in on the fun. After all, your baby’s first summer is an exciting time, so you want to get out there and explore as much as possible. We’ve rounded up a list of 10 things you can do with your little one this summer. And for more activities and events happening in the area, check out our Summer Fun Guide.

1. Take swimming lessons: It’s never too early to get used to the water and learn about swimming safety. Parent & Me lessons are a great way to do just that—and mom and dad get to spend some quality bonding time with their little one.
2. Plan a playdate. Call up some other moms and head over to one of LI's indoor playspaces that caters to the younger set (five and under). It's a great way to beat the heat or stay occupied on a rainy day.
3. See a movie: Another activity for when Mother Nature isn't cooperating is taking in a Baby & Me Movie. Showcase Theaters in Hicksville and Holtsville offers discounted admission to enjoy a current movie in a convenient, baby-friendly setting on select Thursdays each month. Amenities include dim lighting, lowered movie volume, baby changing stations and a stroller area.
4. Check out the fish and penguins: The Long Island Aquarium has indoor and outdoor exhibits, and kids of all ages love checking out the colorful fish and super cute penguins.
5. Take a trip to the farm: Babies love animals, so bring your little one to a local farm or petting zoo so he can get up close and personal with some furry friends.
6. Hit the beach: No summer on LI is complete without a trip to the beach, but there’s more to do than just play in the sand (although that is a ton of fun, too). Take a stroll on the boardwalk at Long Beach or Jones Beach, or check out one of the beach playgrounds around LI.
7. Explore nature: Put baby in a carrier and take a stroll exploring the great outdoors on a nature walk.
8. Go to the playground: Most babies love the swings and slides at the local playground, and LI has plenty of locations to choose from.
9. Enjoy some live entertainment: There are plenty of outdoor shows happening around Nassau and Suffolk, and many are during the day so they won't interfere with baby's bedtime. Pack a bag, bring a blanket (and some non-toxic bug spray) and enjoy.
10. Indulge in ice cream: Let baby sample (possibly) her first taste of ice cream at one of LI’s old-fashioned ice cream parlors.
