Here’s the thing about kids: They need a lot of stuff. From strollers and scooters to winter coats and summer dresses–not to mention the things they use only once or twice. (We’re looking at you, Halloween costumes!)

That’s where consignment shops can come in handy. Consignment shops typically sell "gently used," name-brand items at a fraction of their original prices. There are many consignment shops throughout Westchester and the Hudson Valley, from stores that are open every day to pop-up sales. And, on the flip side, if you find yourself with lots of baby gear to unload, consigning–often by appointment, sometimes as walk-ins–can also be an option.

1. Once Upon A Child – Scarsdale and Somers

Pajamas? Soccer cleats? Halloween costumes? You’ll likely find it at this kid's store, which is open daily in both Scarsdale and Somers. (Just note: The Somers store is closed on Mondays.) You’ll also find toys and books with items as much as 70 percent off what’d you’d normally pay. They also buy gently-used- clothing and other things. At the Scarsdale store, you don’t need an appointment to sell. At the Somers store you can walk in for “express" sales of fewer than 10 pieces, but for more than that, you have to make an appointment on their website.

2. Affordables – Dobbs Ferry

This is another shop where items run the gamut for kids—from baby stuff, like cribs and strollers, to kids’ clothes from brands like Ralph Lauren. There's also sports gear and even toys and accessories, like American Girl doll gear. They also have maternity clothes. To consign, make an appointment with them directly—if sold, you get anywhere from 40 to 50 percent of what it sells for.

While this store on Main Street in Beacon carries a whole variety of items—women's and men’s clothing, home accessories, etc.—they also have some kids’ pieces as well. If you’re interested in consigning, start by making an appointment
